Google+ (Google's competitor to Facebook) is still in an invite-only beta phase but is getting rave reviews. A co-worker of mine got his invite today and is loving it. I usually get invites early from Google too. If I get an invite or two to hand out, who is interested?

It looks to be far less cluttered, easier to use, more private, and more advanced than Facebook.

http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/28/google-invite-received-we-go-hands-on/

Google is really looking to set itself apart from the pack with its "Circles" feature (that it has denied in the past). You see, Google lets you create groups, or, "Circles," to which you can add and remove contacts. This means that you can separate your work buddies from your drinking buddies -- or, "epic bros" as Google suggests categorizing them. Google's also tapping into its many algorithms to suggest contacts to be added to Circles, much like it does with emails in Gmail -- though you can still add contacts directly by email address should you so desire. The process of creating new Circles and physically dragging contacts into them is quite dynamic -- we're definitely impressed with the interface.

Plus' "Hangout" feature has its sights firmly set on Skype's multi-user video chat. Once the plug-in is installed, clicking the button will deliver a note to your followers' stream letting them know that you're "hanging out." Clicking the button triggers a Skype-like window with the faces of those you're chatting with. Whoever has the floor appears in the main window -- and like the aforementioned service, it allows for text chat along the side. Unsurprisingly, the feature also offers YouTube integration, letting users collaboratively watch videos and create running commentaries in the chat -- or verbally using that new Google Voice Search tech.

// be a repeat of the Google Wave fiasco...

Belasco
07-06-2011, 07:35 PM
P, were you on twitter when one of our followers did a "tweetoff" where he judged his favorite tweets? He asked that people use #tweetoff as the hashtag. during the day we all discovered that #tweetoff is used by hot, norwegian, teen girls use to signify they're going to bed. You should type that in your search sometime.

Belasco
07-23-2011, 09:28 PM
I'm loving it.

Circles is a great concept in that they allow you to share content with specific people.

A few of my circles are:

Family
Friends
Friends (Austin)
SFJ
OpieAnthony/RonFez

There's 200+ people in the last one. I can view content posted in an individual circle.

I'm considering setting a "Hypersensitive" circle so that they can be excluded from the less politically correct stuff. It really kicks Facebook in the ass in that respect.

I spend more time at g+ than I do facebook now. I'd like to do an Sfj Hangout (live audio/video chat with up to 10 people at once) on g+ at some point.

EDIT: In actuality, something like G+ could push message boards even further to the back-burner because you can basically create discussion and content by and for a specific group of people based on interests.

For example: You create a post, share that post with the SFJ circle that you have added people to. Those that are in the circle can comment on the post and discuss it.

The key to it is to find people who share the same interests and add them to your circles. You control what you want to see from what circles. I've got 250+ people in my Opie & Anthony and Ron & Fez circles and it's made a huge difference.

09-26-2011, 05:46 PM
So it's only cliquey when people know their in a cliquey circle?

Belasco

No. The idea is that you won't necessarily want to share everything with everyone.

I have a circle for SFJ to share stuff with SFJ people.
I have a circle specifically for friends in Austin (I don't need to ask friends in NC if they want to go see a film at the Drafthouse).
I have a circle for friends in general (includes Austin).
I have a circle for family.
I have a circle for "Opie & Anthony/Ron & Fez" people.

... and several more. You can share with one circle, many circles, all circles, the public, or specific individuals.

It's a good platform. You should try it, Beans.
