What are Usergroups?

What are Usergroups? I read the FAQs on them and it didn't shed much light.

They can be used for a variety of things, e.g., if there was a "Donuts" usergroup, all the people who liked donuts could join, and it'd be clear that they liked donuts. KFJ could then give the donuts users access to a special, donuts group only forum which only they could see.

It's more useful on broader sites. Since we're all here for one purpose, not so useful.

Go to your UserCP and "group memberships" and identify yourself with whatever group you want and it will change your name color to that group's color.

It will for "STS Coalition" and "Gloids R Us", but not for "Zookeepers Anonymous" and "Mongos International". Maybe 'cause they don't have a group moderator. But it won't allow me to do that. Blessed be your name.
