I saw the ad on the TV this morning for it and I thought WTF?

Weirder still is they got Booze to provide the voice for The Beaver.

And oddly enough, it's gotten mostly positive reviews. Apparently Gibbon's character is mentally ill and that makes it the "feel-good" movie of the year.

The film, in which Foster also stars, opened this weekend to a disappointing $104,000 from 22 theaters in top markets. The per-screen average -- the standard by which limited releases are judged -- was only $4,745.

Summit was hoping for a per-screen average in the $15,000 to $18,000 range.

"The opening was less than what we had hoped for," Summit executive Richie Fay admitted. When asked if the planned sequel The Beaver and the Wombat (which adds a second, wombat puppet with a French accent to Mel's other hand) is now in jeopardy, Fay replied, "We'll take a wait-and-see approach."
