A lot of us here like film documentaries if they're done right. They don't come along too often. But when they do, here's the place to discuss them.
For those of you who subscribe to Netflix and get movies streamed through the xbox 360, you gotta check out this documentary called Food Inc.
It's not quite as entertaining as Super Size Me, but it's 100 times more alarming and eye-opening. They expose just about every aspect of the food industry in America and it's.... Well it's pretty fucked up. Certain parts of it got a little too "greenie tree hugger" for my taste, but they tried to balance it out with a more common sense approach. It was more about greed, control, and another classic example of how our government will fuck up a good thing for "the greater good".
Check it out.

I've got that downloaded. I read the book, but I ain't got around to watching the doc yet. I'll check it out.
I've also got that Chris Rock doc Good Hair ready to go.
And I dunno if you lot will be able to get hold of it, but the BBC just screened a 2 part, 3 hour doc about Live Aid that was pretty great. Especially the bit where they ask Phil Collins about his drumming with Led Zep. If you can find any way to access the BBC iPlayer, check it out.

My boss just suggested Anvil - the story of Anvil to me this week.
I still ain't seen Tyson, but it should be in queue for this weekend.
Any of you seen a doc about mental illness made 20-30 years ago that follows 4-5 people around and one of them gets a lobotomy? There is this dude that seems really normal throughout the show, the. At the end they show you he is a hobo and likes to wipe his shit on stuff. That was a good show. B+ Wish I could remember the name of it.

"Fuel" is a ballsucking pile of propaganda bullshit.
Michael Moore Hates America isn't too bad.
Tyson was a great doc, but he's still a psycho.

I watched a doc on Netflix yesterday called "James Ellroy: Feast of Death". It was mesmerizing especially if you're into Ellroy's crime novels or true crime books.

Nice one, fellas. I've got those two downloading.
A doc called Senna was released at the cinema a couple of weeks ago & everyone is raving about it. A bit like those ESPN films, it sounds like it doesn't matter whether you know anything about Ayrton Senna & F1 or not. In fact, it's probably better if you go in without knowing Senna's story.
It's all over EZN & Demonoid. There's even a dual audio version knocking about with a director's commentary on it. I've got it lined up to watch with Booze Jr this weekend.

I don't know if you guys have seen "The King of Kong". The premise is that a semi-normal dad trys to beat the world record for the King Kong arcade game. The worlds biggest tool is the record holder. I liked it.

We're all big fans of King of Kong here. I think we inducted Billy Mitchell to the SFJ Hall of Fame. I still haven't seen "Chasing Ghosts" though. Is it any good?

I haven't seen Chasing Ghosts. I'd really like to see what shaped Mr. Mitchell into the man that he is.
I made the mistake of buying "I'm Still Here" as my first blu-ray. (Why I didn't just grab Forrest Gump or Die Hard is beyond me) The premise of that is such BS. Just for clarity, the jaoquin phoenix "in character" mockumentary/documentary. I'm sure Jaoquin has been discussed at length in some other thread. I have to say this though.
After seeing it I asked myself, at what point did joaquin say to himself, "Man, I remember River, my dead brother. He was great, I really loved him. People loved him.
Did he have a drug problem? Yes.
Did I call 911 when he was overdosing? Yes.
Should I create a "character" that has a huge drug problem as a practical joke at the height of my successful acting career? Absolutely... God dammit, I am good. People are gonna love this. It won't remind them of River, my dead older brother, at all. I should go tell mom about this."
"I'm Still Here" should not be supported or seen. Admit you have a problem Jaouquin. Rap isn't good.
And Belasco, god help me if you say there's a thread about this in the Hall of Fame. :)

The biggest problems those Phoenix kids had were their god damn names. They already have the last name Phoenix. Getting any more wild than "Bill" for the first name is asking for a lifetime of problems.

It's been discussed in one of the original two catch-all movie threads long ago. Apparently, it may now belong in the "Documentaries Starring Steve Wiebe" thread I'm sure has been created -- right next to the other Standup Comedy thread offshoot nest: "Individual Standup Comics" - there may even be a Jim Gaffigan one, a Chris Rock one, a Colin Quinn one. I see by your icon we will soon need a Mitch Hedberg thread.

This is a fuckin' trip! HBO already bought the rights earlier this year to turn it into a movie or series.

Documentary examines the brutal world of bare ‘Knuckle’ fighting - Illegal bare knuckle fights still held in UK each year

Illegal bare-knuckle fights are still held in non-sporting venus like underground car parks in London or - as the new documentary film Knuckle demonstrates - on the edge of Traveller encampments all over the UK.
Directed by Ian Palmer, who began the project by filming the wedding of Michael Quinn McDonagh until his introduction to this hidden world took over, Knuckle explores the world of bare-knuckle fighting, and for 12 years it has tracked the longstanding feud between the three Irish Traveller families, the Quinn McDonaghs and their opponents the Joyces and the Nevins.
The grudge between the families began after two different Traveller clan members had a fight outside a London pub in 1998, which ended in the death of one and a manslaughter conviction for the other.
Palmer's cameras follow James Quinn McDonagh, who after years of remaining unbeaten, freely admits he's grown tired of all the fighting. Enter his more confrontational younger brother Michael, who hopes to retrieve the honor he feels he lost in an unfortunate bout nine years before.
The bouts themselves are shockingly violent. In between the bouts, we see the homemade videos that the clans send to each other as provocations, while various sociologists provide some insight into the psyche of the male Traveller.
Knuckle asks some hard questions about the feud that seems to be all these communities live for, but its impossible to look away. 'At least wars are about something!' says one onlooker in the film. And that may be why they endure.
Knuckle is on general release in UK cinemas from 5th August.
