Remember that fighter what punched himself in the face?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6dxPO_Z57xg
Well, his name is Tyson Fury (lol), he's fighting tonight & the weigh-in shenanigans have been looping on Sky Sports News today. He's upset his opponent a bit by calling him 'a McMuffin', but you can't help thinking he might have a point. I love how the site has translated McDermott's quotes from cockney into English.
McDermott's Fury at jibes
English champion vows to let fists do talking
http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,12183_5549336,00.html
Unbeaten heavyweight Tyson Fury has angered John McDermott with his trash talking ahead of their bout for the English title on Friday night.
The giant 21-year-old has swept aside all in his path so far, claiming seven straight wins by way of knockout.
But Fury is set for his most serious test at the Brentwood Centre in Essex on Friday night against a man that has mixed it with the likes of Danny Williams and Matt Skelton.
Rather than looking to play down expectations, though, it seems the Fury is doing everything he can to rile his opponent.
\"John McDermott, What can you say about him? He's a bit chubby, but he's a good fighter. I'm definitely going to knock him out though,\" Fury told Sky Sports News.
\"There's only one man going to be touching down and it isn't Tyson Fury, guaranteed.\"
Anger
To make matters worse, Big Bad John will be on home turf on Friday night and, after a tempestuous weigh-in, now has all the motivation he needs for the bout.
\"To be honest the worse thing he's done is call me McMuffin,\" McDermott said. \"That's the worst thing he's done because I have trained like a maniac.
\"I've lived in a hole for six weeks, kept away from my family, I've done nothing but train so it's the worst thing he's done was to call me that.
\"He's in for a war. I'm going to knock him out that's what's going to happen. Talking isn't fighting. Fighting's fighting and talking's talking.

It's from a Brit site, but you shouldn't have any BBC style region problems with the video.
No points for spotting what would be different about this heavyweight bout if it was happening in the States.

Booze, is boxing still 'big' over there? Do you have to have premium channels to watch it or do they still show that on basic cable like they used to do here in the late 80's to mid 90's? Shit, I watched a lotta good fights on USA back in the day. I miss that.

No, it's completely fucked out, just like it is over there.
But I miss it, too. That's why I'm all psyched to watch this fight, just because a lanky northerner called a porky Londoner a McMuffin.
The Hatton fights & that last Calzaghe one were on PPV. But there's been a resurgence of showing decent bouts on terrestrial telly & Sky Sports.

Damn it, I wish that would happen here! I bet that eastern europe/slovak/sub-human countires have a shitload of boxing on regular TV. Yeah, they're beaner-poles and they fight worth a shit, but it's the principal of the thing. Bring back boxing to mainstream TV. People love it, especially if it's semi-legit and don't have to pay $50 to watch it.

They still show some pretty good lightweight/featherweight fights on one of the beaner channels (telemundo?) on either Friday or Saturday night. Sure, the commentary's in Spanish, but who gives a shit? I've flipped through the channels and caught a good fight once or twice. And the boxers aren't always hispanic- just the commentary.

*******BIG FIGHT UPDATE*******
Tyson Fury comes out to the sound of 'Mr Big Stuff', boogies into the ring, shadow boxes the cameraman, cracks grins at the baying Essex crowd & couldn't look more like Apollo Creed if he was coated in chocolate & wearing a top hat.
McDermott shuffles out to a cheesy rave tune, looking like he's been chucked out of the pub next door, gurning & wearing a silky blue tracksuit that, for some reason, has the name 'Sophie' on the left breast. He does look a bit like a McMuffin.

The ring isn't big enough for 6 foot 9 Fury. McMuffin is getting inside him all the time, right up his ribs. And although their builds would make you think Fury will be better off the longer this goes on, he's never gone beyond 4 rounds in a pro fight.
McMuffin went the distance in his last two.

Then the MC calls it 98-92 Fury. This smells fishier than Ed's eye.

Fury rematch for McDermott
Londoner given chance to confirm superiority
The British Boxing Board of Control have ordered a re-match between John McDermott and Tyson Fury to take place within 90 days.
The first fight for the English heavyweight title ended controversially when the undefeated Fury was handed a 98-92 verdict by referee Terry O'Connor despite most ringsiders giving it to McDermott.
The BBBC immediately ordered an inquiry into the decision while McDermott's promoter Frank Maloney also appealed on behalf of the Londoner, demanding the fight to be ruled 'no contest'.
Following Wednesday's hearing, the governing body honoured the decision but ordered the two back into the ring by Christmas.
The result of the first fight only served to heat up the bad blood between the pair after Fury had taunted McDermott in the preliminaries, calling him 'McMuffin' and 'Big Mac'.
\"I'm happy with the re-match but I'm unhappy that it wasn't made at 50-50, because even if they say he (Fury) is a champion, he is a champion by default,\" Maloney said after emerging from the meeting.
\"He was given the title by incompetent scoring and for the board to order a re-match they know that something wasn't right with that fight, or that some of the board members don't agree with that scoring.
\"I made a point that I wouldn't want Terry O'Connor anywhere near an arena where I am promoting shows. Their response was that I can't pick my officials.
\"I was reprimanded. I think the whole hearing was a joke and does no good for the general public's view of British boxing.\"
Sky Bet make Fury 2-5 favourite to win the second clash despite McDermott's excellent performance last time.
Boxing spokesman Scott Springgay said: \"On the night, McDermott looked to have been the rightful winner.
\"However, I still make him the underdog for the rematch as Fury now has that extra experience of going 10 rounds and is fully aware of the task ahead of him.\"

I'm sure you've seen Valuev. He's 7 foot odd & weighs 320 pounds. Haye is 6ft 2 & has only just stepped up to heavyweight. This is going to be like something out of Rocky.

Tyson Fury too strong for John McDermott as he wins heavyweight clash in round nine
They were calling the re-match 'Conspiracy Fury' on account of the controversial points decision that handed Tyson Fury the English heavyweight title against John McDermott nine months ago at Brentwood Leisure Complex.
By Gareth A Davies, Boxing Correspondent
Published: 12:55AM BST 26 Jun 2010
Referee Terry O'Connor was pilloried for the decision in 2009 which brought a landmark move by the British Boxing Board of Control to have three judges for all English titles.
The Board also ordered an immediate rematch. Promoter Frank Maloney claimed that it was "the most controversial decision since Henry Cooper was outpointed by Joe Bugner in 1971".
There was little controversy at the second coming in Brentwood on Friday night as Fury put McDermott down three times to stop his foe in the ninth round, and retain his unbeaten career record and the title. It was the first time McDermott had been down in his 32-fight career.
http://i46.tinypic.com/dmwmqu.jpg
Fury boxed well in the opening stanza keeping McDermott at bay with a long jab and landed two telling right crosses.
Fury took a heavy right hook in the second and as the fight progressed through the fourth McDermott began to produce the better work behind his jab.
McDermott's best round was the sixth when he landed a heavy right hook and although the Mancunian responded in kind he looked exhausted and held on. He was warned by referee Dave Parris for doing so. Fury ended the round with blood seeping from a cut in the corner of his right eye.
Fury had a point deducted in the seventh for holding but in the eighth a decisive barrage dropped McDermott close to the end of the round.
McDermott was soon back on the canvas in the ninth from a short chopping right and in the next exchange went down again and staggered to his feet on the count of 10. All three judges had the contest 77-73 going into the ninth round.
Fury, 22, the towering 6ft 9ins tall Mancunian who weighed in at 254lbs on Thursday, turned pro in Dec 2008 after 34 amateur contests with fighting in his blood.
This was his 11th victory. Fury's family are renowned among fighting travellers, and his father John fought as a professional and as a bare knuckle fighter.
McDermott's father, Stan, also fought as a heavyweight in the Seventies. Both fathers were in their sons' corners on Friday night.
McDermott must count as one of the unluckiest British big men. He has certainly had little go his way in the past two years.
He lost to Brixton heavyweight Danny Williams - once the victor over Mike Tyson - in Dagenham by a disputed majority decision. It was very close. So was the re-match 13 months ago over 12 rounds, yet Williams edged it on the judges' cards.
The last contest between Fury and McDermott was a ragged, ill-tempered affair.
Second time around there was clear mutual respect, but all the plaudits to Fury on a balmy night in Brentwood.
