I know there are probably a couple of these floating around out there...but it's time for a "reboot", lol, rollies.

I'm going to buy a new iMac...do you think it's worth waiting a few months until "Snow Leopard" comes out? Do you think these new machines will run a lot better than they already do on Leopard? Just looking for your opinions. Thx

It depends on whether waiting a couple of months is worth $129 to you. That's the price point for new Mac OS's. I doubt you'll have to worry about the hardware specs improving on the iMacs, they were already recently upgraded.

So, the $129 for the new OS should be all of the extra cost you would have to absorb. There's also a chance that Apple will give a discounted upgrade price to people who recently purchased a new Mac.

I love my iMac. It's a fantastic machine.

Llama- I can't see your image. Like Maker, you may want to try imageshack, lol.

Belasco- That's a good point about them possibly offering a discount later on. I'm impatient and eager to get my hands on the imac NOW, but considering I'll be dropping around 1700-1800 bucks (even with the 6% discount I inexplicably get for being a Time Warner employee), every $100 counts. Maybe I'll just make do with my old, outdated equipment for now.

There's also the Mac refurb store. My iMac is a refurb. My chick's MacBook Pro is a refurb. They've been really great machines and being refurbs saved us several hundred bucks.

Yeah, I've been considering that. I'm thinking it's worth a few extra hundred to get the new 24" with twice the RAM, the bigger hard drive, etc. But I am still strongly considering a refurb.

I was a Microsoft lifer -- hated all the Hollywood heebs and their Mac bullshit back in the day. Intel jumps on board, OS X comes out, and Belasco basically convinces me to make the switch.

Best thing I've ever done. Fuck legacy OS design; fuck oceans of viruses; fuck oceans of spyware and keystroke logs; fuck .dll files and the thousands of your programs trying to access them at the same time and crashing/hanging yer shit; fuck Ctrl-Alt-Del; fuck the Task Manager; and fuck Microsoft. I'm born again Mac. Over a year now and not a single fucking problem: no hanging; no freezing; no rebooting; nothin' but smooth-ass sailin'. Worth every extra goddamn dollar spent.

:tip:

I'm still indebted to Tabasco for tricking me into buying one.

... If you buy from an independent dealer, and revisit them after the snow leopard release, they will probably just give you a copy... A lot of the independents will set up Macs for larger companies and just install their dealer copy of the OS from external hard drive....

They use the leftover OS discs that are shipped with each computer as coasters...

.... Or you could just look for a copy of the new OS online... Mac makes more money with you buying the machine than their OS...

I recently gained possession of an Ipod shuffle 1GB. I decided I'd use this bugger to listen to Stern shows and such in the car. How the f do you get .mp3's on there? I downloaded Itunes, and it found the Stern shows automatically, but there's no way to sync it with the Ipod. wtf

I've never owned a shuffle, but when it's connected, can you set it to "manually manage music" in itunes? Maybe you can upload shit to it that way. Maybe not. Glad to be of very little help. :tip:

There is a proprietary cable that connects from the computer's USB port to the Shuffle's headphone jack.

Hey, Maker, one good thing about Macs? You don't need to replace your Ctrl-Alt-Del keys from so much wear & tear.

Wedge, by ALL MEANS ... MAX OUT YOUR RAM. Thank me later. RAM shows you more tangible working speed than that little microscopic increase in processing (in my experience).

Whatchyoo got on that Pro you're running? 4 GB? That seems insanely fast for anything other than real intense video work.

I'm holding off on buying an imac until the fall or winter, anyway...it's definitely a case of WANT rather than NEED.

Yeah, mine's loaded for video editing (8GB RAM, soon to be 16), but one of our erstwhile members picked up a simple 13.5" Macbook and just upgraded it to 4GB of RAM and a bigger HD, and he said there's no lookin' back. Happy as a fuckin' clam.

Point is, you don't wanna be takin' apart a LAPTOP to put more memory in. Just make sure you have a *little* more than you think you need, and BYP's yer uncle.

Apple revealed the "iPad" today. Anybody interested in this? Not being able to multi-task kills it for me. I was hoping for something more like a Kindle. Instead they gave us an underpowered Netbook for twice the price.

Yeah, that's a big downside too. I think Apple is betting on HTML5 supplanting Flash as the dominant media player for the web. There's a good chance they're right based on what I've heard. Still, after seeing the Droid hammer them on not being able to multi-task you'd think they would pull that together for this. Having used both a Droid and an iPod Touch I can attest to how much of a benefit multi-tasking is when you want to post to a message board while listening to Pandora and monitoring a Twitter feed.

Yeah, the multitasking is a bitch.

But even if HTML5 does kick ass and change everything, it will still take a long while to kick in everywhere. Right?

Belasco

Not really. Just this week Google Voice got around Apple's app banning by releasing a web app version (which I think is HTML5) that'll run on the iPhone.

The large black border around the screen is to help you hold it without making mistake strokes to the touchscreen.

TheWagesofSin
01-30-2010, 10:25 PM
The iPad might one day be a great device, but has some major drawbacks. As Belasco mentioned, no multitasking, no USB or video output, no Flash capability, no camera. Apple usually seems to have a little something extra when they unveil a new device, but this time around I think they've under-delivered. I don't much like the fonts they've chosen for the GUI, either. In fact, those fonts make me very angry.

moneymaker
01-30-2010, 10:39 PM
I've read several things online (no LA Times, sorry, Wedge) about the "marketing blunder" calling it the iPad as in "the rag". I am as about as sick as they come* but that NEVER even crossed my mind until I read the reviews.

Yeah, all these creeps are making iPad jokes like it's some example of great observational humor. I'm juvenile as shit and, although the association occurred to me, I didn't see the point in jumping on that bandwagon of dumb.

Dr. P
01-30-2010, 10:57 PM
How can you not make those jokes? I mean, unless you know someone else has seen it and has a funnier observation, you gotta say something about that product! It's a weird kindle but I can't figure out how to hold it. You ain't jumping on some bandwagon for your chance to wrinkle your face and get the big laughs when that's the hot new thing unveiled.

On a serious note, I am need of a new home desktop and have been thinking about a new all-in-on touch screen for the kids. However, I am tempted to have them use my laptop (about 2 years old) and spending only $299 on a new netbook for travel and on the couch. They have just about everything my current laptop has sans the large screen and disk drive. The price is only going to go down, so I see this as the largest iRag obstacle. I think I smell bean dip on this one.
