no, it isnt 1996 and this isnt a random "microsoft sux0rs" thread.
i do computer repair for people, and i cant name how many times i have run up against retarded and idiotic things that windows xp does.
this isnt about vista.
take right now for example.
this guy steals software. everything he can find.
he then gets a virus which deletes a file that is required to log on to windows.
so why would windows lose the file? the file is gone because an antivirus program saw it was infected and then removed it. now the computer is stuck in an endless log on loop.
but why would microsoft allow access to any file required to log into windows to start with.
its fucking retarded.
this is the operating system that 90% or so of people around the world are forced to use, and it is completely breakable at any time.
want to fuck with someone? just delete one little file located here:
c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe
this will kill the ability to log on at all, sending it to a loop of logging on and off.
fun huh?
want to break it more? just delete the registry key associated with it.
i finally gave up and right now i am just doing a restore installation of it. but its just fucked. my mac never freaks out like this.
go figure, guess that is why i paid way to much for the mac.

I'm sure Belasco has a lot to say on this- he's the resident mac enthusiast around here. Coach, too, but he boned out on the site.
I use an imac and an older Powerbook, and I love the mac OS; however, I don't think most everyday users see enough of a problem with Windows to make the switch to Apple products, especially considering the price difference. This neverending hue and cry by Apple fanbois is one which much of the average public doesn't give two shits about...must of us want cheap, fast computers for uploading porn and playing video games.Bing, bang, boom.

By the way...last time someone brought up UNIX, I thought they were explaining Dogbert and Malcolm Middle's inability to get laid...

I us an iMac and it has a dirty little way of shutti g down for no ducking reason it any third party video plugins are Installed such as perian or flip4mac.
at least I hunk that is what causes it seeing as it's been 5 days since I removed all these and it's the longest uptime ive had in almost a year.
macs aren't perfect.

I've had both of those installed on my iMac and haven't had that problem. I'm not using flip4mac anymore, but Perian is still going strong.

Ok, I've got a question for the tech fags on the site. I've got an old laptop that's in good physical shape, but it tends to get pretty hot, and the RAM is maxed out (6 year old Dell w/XP). The thing is pretty damn slow, though. We already have the replacement, so I was thinking about playing with the older one to get a little more mileage out of it. I was thinking about putting a free Unix based OS on it...only if it will help with the speed of the system. Do you guys think that might help make the machine run a little more efficiently? Or should this old computer be used as a beater (lol)?

Goto your local Best Buy and shell out $100 and you'll be at 2002 PC requirements.

lmao Heaps, I have been screwing around with different operating systems for my netbook and have been surprised at how easy it is to change over. I have loaded Ubuntu on my machine and screwed around with that, and I will definitely mess around with Google's Chrome OS. But right now I'm sticking with XP. It just has all the right codecs and whatnot for my pr0n.

There are tons of low resource Linux distributions you could try. Also, any Linux distro will run your old hardware better than XP. The issue is 'what software do you absolutely have to have?' If all you need is web browsing and email, Linux is the way to go. I recommend Ubuntu, but if your machine is still sluggish with that try DamnSmallLinux or PuppyLinux. You can get a Live CD for each one of them and try them out before changing anything. You won't get a true idea of the speed since it will be running off of the CD drive instead of a hard drive, but you will get a chance to examine the software and try out open source package installations to try to replace XP software you normally use.
lmao @ all those replies. Thanks, 'lasco. I think I might switch over on that old machine. :tip:

I picked up a desktop back in January for Windows Media Center capabilities and it had Windows 7 on it. I figured I should give it a fair shake before tossing it in the scrap heap with Vista, XP, et al.
After the first week of codec hell that is requisite with any Windows purchase, I've gotta say Microsoft may have gotten it right. It's a cheap machine, but despite that it goes from black to web browsing in well under 2 minutes. Windows Media Center works great - I hooked up a USB TV tuner and it records over the air HDTV just like a TiVo.
Anyone else's thoughts? It pains me to show my endorsement for those asshats in Redmond but with the 360 blowing Sony out of the water and 7's success, maybe giving Billy Gates an early retirement was the smart move.

Yeah Win 7 isn't a total clusterfuck. Granted I just do basic stuff on it, but it seems to do the job.

I love my 2006 imac G5- I've given it firewirealingus many times- but I still think Windows has its good points, and if Windows 7 is as good as I hear, I would consider buying a laptop to do various workshit and other little things I can't do on my PowerPC Mac.

There are three different levels of Mac Fags: the computer fags who have conventions to discuss the "elegance" of the OS, the workaday fags who love that Apple computers boot up real quick without having to worry about viruses, and the fag fags who simply feel it's more pleasing aesthetically.

I don't mind what Spooner, Belasco, Verno, and other here say about the "superiority" of the Mac. They're probably right and I just like giving them shit for being "Mac fags" just because. But there is a long held mentality out there of "Macs are better" and in some cases, it's a load of horse shit. Some kid used Macs at their public school and then they grew up and went off to college and their hippy parents decided to buy them a Mac Notebook. Said kid goes around telling everyone how Macs are better just because that's all they've ever known and because they feel special for being one of the 10% of people out there who have one. They've never even compared the two OS's to get the facts. That's their sole basis for thinking that a Mac is better.

If it wasn't for the week of codec hell I went through with that Windows box, I'd say it's hands down better than Snow Leopard. But because of that, I'll say it's on par.
In other words, I give both a B+
