View Full Version : Ipod problems (again)

I have a connection problem goin' on. The thing plays fine, but I can't add my new shit to it. Keep getting an error "Can not detect file Fun Rape's Ipod," I've done ever damn thing I know to, restore, restart, etc. Even uninstalled Itunes and reinstalled it. It gives me the "Do not disconnect" when I hook it up, but it never "finishes" and I have a bunch of pre-election bullshit still on my drive. Any y'all Apple nazis got an idea?
Dr. P
11-06-2008, 10:05 AM
Oh, NOW the bitch is saying "The wrong volume is in the drive. Please instert volume FUN RAPE'S IPOD into drive F:." But I only have one Ipod (now). It's the same one I've been using for about a year, since my backup died.
Dr. P

Attempting to copy to the disk FUN RAPE'S IPOD failed. An unknown error occurred (69). Lol, 69

I found this...
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=829265
I started having the same problem after over a year of no problems at all with my shuffle. I'd be able to copy 79+ songs and then all of a sudden the "The wrong volume is in the drive. Please insert volume ...". If I was lucky there would be a few new songs on the thing but I could never get more than 30 or 40 of the 280+ it normally holds.
I finally SOLVED this problem this morning by simply going into the iPod's settings in iTunes and checking "Enable disk use."
It was that simple. The thing is back to normal. Finally.
Prior to doing that, I could see the iPod appear as a volume in Windows, then I could see iTunes updating the iPod, and as soon as that update would complete, the volume would disappear from view in Explorer and other views within Windows.
With Enable disk use set, even with zero space allocated for disk use, this behavior does not occur.
Sure seems like an iTunes bug. It wasn't always this way.

iPods are great if you run a Mac. Ask anyone who runs Windows how much they like how iTunes stretches itself out in your OS, puts its feet up, lights a cigarette in your house, and makes itself at home.
I went with the Zune for two reasons: (1) iTunes won't overwrite my metatags/ID3 info I've TEDIOUSLY entered (and still am), (2) it won't overwrite my perfectly honed album art with a "Libra" symbol because it can't find MY album in its store, and (3) bye-bye DRM!!!!!
I still love my fucking Mac Pro over the Windows OS any fucking day, though. The irony.

Zune. Trust me. A *very* knowledgeable member here FULLY convinced me to buy the 120--gave me absolute and irrefutable reasons to choose IT, and I've been THOROUGHLY impressed with it now that the new Zune software is in place.
If you have your music ripped shitty, though, Russ (128's & shit), you MAY want or need an internal EQ, in which case I love all Creative Zen products. But if your tunes are clean 320's or even nicely ripped 192's, then Zune's the way, especially if you're into cataloging and recapturing the days when you had ALBUMS--I'm reveling in rebuilding my collections (via album covers and ID3 tagging) album by album instead of just by Artist folders.
It's a lot of work, but it's well worth the end result. :tip:

As for easynews, I just would rather not get involved.
(deleted big thing about how Easynews is a way to access usenet, and while Easynews knows what you're accessing, it's not likely that they will be compelled by the feds to narc you out)
If you grab music files from Easynews, it's not going to corrupt your system. If you're super worried about it, you can virus scan it but it's an extra unnecessary step.
You uncode the .mp3/wtfever specific music file (something like Agent, a usenet reader, isn't malware either and is well supported. You would save the encrypted file with that, and then use a joiner - which also are generally spyware/virus free as thousands of porn/music heads can vouch for).
Once decrypted and put together, The only stuff that's going to play those files is something made for playing music files (winamp, windows media player, zune software).
Those programs won't execute that file in a way that your operating system will execute a .exe/.bin/.bat file. A music player is reading the data, the file can't tell it 'oh, and delete his snake photos' because the music player isn't programmed to interpret that kind of data.
I don't know how else to explain it - I understand your stance on music piracy, but on the R&F issue - if you're already paying the subscription, I don't think you're morally in the wrong for downloading the files in a different format that you can listen to on your Zune from Usenet through Easynews.

I feel the same way about software, P.
Tabasco, I got my first PC when I was 16. Others were younger when they got theirs. Programs like Word Perfect 5.x and CorelDraw and PhotoShop were BEYOND prohibitively expensive for ANY kid that age (we're talking $450 - $800, and them were Eighties dollars). If it weren't for me getting "a copy" of these critical apps (including dBase and Reflex 2.0--Borland), I (and millions of other kids) would've NEVER had a chance at getting turned onto the possibilities of computing and computer art.
I ended up revolutionizing my old man's business (no bullshit; I'll explain one day if needed in a PM) by knowing ALL these programs and how they work together--and I couldn't dream of affording a single ONE of 'em at that age. Thank GOD for software theft, at least back then. It made me spend almost in the hundreds of thousands in the industry SINCE, because the spark was ignited, where otherwise that Epson Equity II+ would've sat there and been the world's biggest paperweight.
Just sayin', there is a relativity to it--and there is also a rebound effect that ends up stimulating the very industry itself (I'm only talking about KIDS who get $1 a week allowance, but have drive and talent for computer software they can't afford).

My iPod took a big shit.
I mentioned about a month ago that it took a one-foot drop off of the bottom of a bookshelf. Well, I've realized recently that the hard drive is fucked up from that little one-foot journey. I can't copy to it, even in "hard-disk mode".I'm pushing buttons like a maniac; I'm reformatting it to my mac, to my PC; I'm reading every cockamamie thing online that tells you how to fix hard drive problems on the iPod.
I've realized that one-foot drop fucked this thing up, but good. I wasn't pleased with it to begin with. I love Apple's computers, but this cash-cow of theirs is an over-restrictive, super-fragile, shitass-audio-producing pile of problems.
I'm sending it back to them and I'm hoping I don't get charged. Meanwhile, something with a flash drive is on my horizon. Maybe the Zen X-Fi 32 GB. If I only had $500 to burn...

See PM, Russ. I'm intrigued by Wedge's iPod failure and his willingness to point out iPod's shortcomings on the software front.
Wedge, you've read all our Creative Labs/Zen talk--you've heard all the Zune stuff (the Zune, for me, is a dedicated device, for my ride, to return me to the good old days of album art using only 256 - 320kbps rips (with an occasional 160 I just can't find again---and I think it upsamples those to 192, not that it changes the quality, naturally).
Zune's got NO EQ, so it's really about good SOURCE SOUND playing through GOOD HEADPHONES or a reasonably decent car stereo (which is where you can EQ to your heart's content).
I agree: Until Apple starts (a) offering their music at at LEAST 256kbps, AND (b) stops overwriting your own ID3 tags and custom album art, AND (c) filling your folders with unwanted ".ds_store" files, they can fuck themselves forever. I LOVE my Mac Pro more than any other electronic device I've owned, BUT, fuck iTunes!!! And you wrote that down to save it for posterity somewhere, right, for 'in case it happens again'? I am pro-software blood, gore, and viscera, I love seeing that stuff.

I have a friend what bought his kid an ipod nano for crismus and the thing froze up on him after he put tunes on it the first time. So I was at the house last night and I see this ipod sittin on the counter and they tell me its still whacked and they are going to try and get it replaced. So I took it home and charged it up and it starts working for me, then it just freezes, the music was still plaing but the menus are inaccessible. So I get on apple.com and start reading some tips and figure out how to re-set, and that doesn't work, so I performed a full blown enema, wiped it out and loaded the latest firmware etc. and Still had problems.
So I break down and call tech support at lunch today, I get an automated phone system, "tell me your product"blah blah blah, I feel like a tool responding this thing in the office and as soon as it started leading me down the "lets try a few things first" B.S; shit i know I already tried, I said "I want to talk to someone" to which it replied "I don't understand, have you..." and I said "ipods suck ass, do you understand THAT!".
"Please hold while I get you a customer service agent". Within 12 seconds I was patched through to Raheem in India, and before he could guide me through all the "lets try this" steps I rattled off all the crap I already tried and he said, I think you need to send it in to get fixed.
No SHIT fag!
I hope my fried appreciates my efforts.
(I know, I know "I ain't reading all that shit!") but now I feel better.:tip:

Too bad there are no Apple stores in Idaho. You could just take that fucker in and get it replaced right away.

You shoulda told them you put three Zeppelin tunes in there, and now all it does is play "The Dradle Song" over and over.
Yeah, he should buy you one just for having to talk to Radio Rahim on the goddamn phone: "D, MUTHAFUCKAH, D!!"

The scan function is effed up on my iPod. Here's what happening: I got a file about 38 mins long playing. When I try to scan to a later part of the mp3, say around the 16 min mark, it will still only play audio from the first few mins of the file. In other words, I put the marker at 16 mins and its actually playing from the 5 min mark. I can put the marker ANYWHERE with the 38min timeline, but it's only recognizing the first few minutes. The mp3 will play in it's entirety from beginning to end, but I can't skip around.
Also, I'm thinking about getting a new 120 gigger. I have DRM files from Audible that I want to transfer, and subcribe to on the new Ipod. Will I have any problems with that?
One more thing: I've maxed out the number of machines I can register. What does this mean? Can I not do a clean install, will this conflict with a new iPod? Does that effect Audible content? Jesus H...

The file: I don't know of any settings that restrict scanning. It could be some metadata info in the file that is corrupted. Remove the file from the iPod and then add it again.
Audible DRM: Your new iPod will probably be syncing up with the same computer you use to sync your new iPod. If the Audible files play in that installation of iTunes, they will play on the iPod.
Max registration: The registration thing deals with iTunes only. The iPod is a slave to iTunes authorizations. The rule is, if it's not authorized to be played in the iTunes library you're syncing to, it won't play on the iPod either.

Melon, there are MP3's that are horribly ripped and have errors like this. For example, one of my Hitchens audiobooks does the same thing. Get a copy of Adobe Audition (I'll hook you up if you ain't got it), and then load it in. Save it as a higher bitrate (that is, make it a different, fresh save). This should correct the problem. Give it a try --- it worked for me.

THe file in question is a Phil Hendrie Show hour from 99 taken directly from the official site. I also used an mp3 splitter to cut out parts of it (this is the original unedited 38 min file though), wonder if that could be the culprit.
Is there an easy way to convert .aa (Audible files) to MP3. I dl'ed and app off easynews but couldn't figure in out.

Well, I can't find shit around here anymore, so I ain't huntin' for that iPod t'read to no avail. I know Russ (& I think Wedge) have had a few of 'em blow the fuck up. I was always singin' the gospel about my 120 Classic ... that is until three fuckin' days ago. I thought a possum was trying to break into the house, scratching at the door, but no ... but no ... but no ... but no ... it was my FUCKING iPod hard drive spasin' out non-stop. The one error code to which Apple says, "Don't even CALL us -- just pitch that bitch into oncoming traffic -- yer DONE."
Soes I wound up with a new 160GB. And lemme tell ya what: If *this* whore blows up, I'm gonna set it on fire and toss it through the window of an Apple Store like in Fight Club ... then I'm gonna go fight in a chicken coop without my shirt off ... just because.

How were you searching for it?
There are still some search issues vB is working on. I used advanced search by thread title and found it pretty quickly with the terms "ipod", "apple", and "mac".

FWIW< I got a shitty little flash drive one and it's been great, although I can only really use it for podcasts and radio show, since it's only 32 gig.

Thanks for movin' it, Diddy. It ain't really so much the new software than it is I ain't had ample time to properly ferret through and find out how to best use the new shit.
I must say, though -- I was given this 160GB Classic as a b-day gift, and lemme tell ya what, I *did* have about 200,000 miles on my 120 what blew up, but I still love these fuckers and think they're the best on the market. Flash is great, I'm sure, but I need SPACE, and this bitch delivers. Just my spoken-word audio (OTR, Audiobooks, Podcasts, etc.) is just over 163GB.
As for Creative Labs? You've GOTTA be shittin' me w/these jerkoffs -- they STILL have ZERO software for Macs. I mean, to literally and deliberately remove yourself from half your potential market? Dumbasses.
