View Full Version : General Music/Band Chatter

Ya know, we've gone almost four years w/out a place to just talk generally about bands we dig, why we dig 'em, talkin' liturgy of the greats, discussing personnel changes over the years; individual musicians, etc.

We've only got a "What Are You Listening To?" thread, which is restricted to just that (which is fine).

So, for all fans of tunery and musicians and just talkin' shit about all the shitty poser music of this current generation of choads, OR showing reverence for the great shit of the past, now we have a thread.

I was thinking of Random Music Thoughts, but we've got more Random threads than Carter's got liver pills.

• • •

Okay, so Diddy brought up the Raconteurs in another thread, and I'll start it off by saying that "Steady As She Goes" (especially the chorus) is just stolen from the great Utopia's "Feet Don't Fail Me Now."

Alright, now we can just freely talk music, especially since :beans: ain't here to clog it up with Slayer and Bon Jovi talk.

'S'talk some music!!

Blues.

It's all about the blues for me. Chicago style.

Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker... don't get no better.

One of the tunes the Raconteurs did this weekend was called "Blue Veins" and it was a fantastic blues tune - great tempo changes, "dirty" guitar sound, passionate singing, etc. White played a blistering solo on it.

Welcome to Austin, Belasco!

I'll tell ya one thing, though--thank your lucky stars you didn't grow up a musician. Don't get me wrong, brutha, I love me some swamp and throttled blues like the next cat, but when you've spent over two decades of your life "jamming" with guitar players who do 30-minute solos over the same 12 bars, you could go 20 lifetimes w/out wanting to hear it again. In a way, I'm jealous as hell that you don't have that fucking HEAVY cross to carry. And, you're in JUST the right place for the best kind!

Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee did some of the best blues harmonies, harp, and guitar for my money. I'll upload some if'n you want, Diddy-mac.

Do you mind negro spirituals? That's the best old recording I have of them. Their later stuff was good, but it's really better recorded in a take than the studio stuff.

Speaking of blues...if "Guitar Shorty" is in your area, it might be worth checking him out. He's Hendrix's godfather, or some shit like that, but has a killer set. Even his rhythm guitarist will get out (after the show) into the hotspots in town after hours and whore a guitar off of one of the local douchebags and shoehorn a few sets in, himself.

Tom Morello's new album is out today. Listened to a bit of it today on itunes. Sounds very original with lots of acoustic guitar. Tom's the man. You don't get alot of guitarists out there today that forge their own sound.

Lately I've been doing RB2 more than Pandora, but you either discover cool new stuff in RB or you get exposed to some truly odious stuff.

My new favorite is "A Jagged Gorgeous Winter" by The Main Drag.

Because anyone who writes a lyric about the cracking of a plastic sled when it's super cold outside pretty much has hooked me. I feel kind of bad that it's kind of bordering (?) on Emo-like territory but big shrug.

This is the time of year when I dig out the old cassettes of Dr Demento Halloween shows and listen to them - I'm the biggest sucker for novelty music, especially about my favorite holiday!! Were Cow and Carmen Miranda's Ghost is Haunting Space Station Three here I come!

Music, hmmmm, well ...

My taste in music is rather eclectic. As I scroll through my iPod, I've got everything from Mozart to Vivaldi, The Kingston Trio, Eagles, Supertramp, Pink Floyd, most bands of the 80's, when love songs were kind of sappy or edgy instead of having some dude screaming like someone is sawing his balls off with a spork - "Scream-o", I believe the kids call it.

I am especially fond of anything Dr. Demento, in particular his early years to about 1985. I grew up on that shit and I love it! Charlie Drake's "Bent My Assegai" is one of my favorites, but alas, I cannot find it. :( But I *do* have "Big Bad Bruce" by Greenberg.

Anything and everything Weird Al. Josh Groban tends to make me squishy, too.

Gorillaz, Plain White T's, Gym Class Heroes, some Evanesence ...

Only thing missing from rap is the "c". Hate it. (But I like Soulja Boy and two Eminem songs.)

Evanesence ...

If you want a leap in production and theatricality, check out Nightwish, especially in the Tarja (lead singer who left) years. If you like THAT, you'll probably also like Leaves' Eyes (If you've ever heard 'Nymphetamine (fix)' by Cradle of Filth (God I love me some COF):

6dW6aNAZGTM

She's the clear sounding voice. Her stuff is like Nightwish - symphonic 'gothic' metal.

Then some black balloons drop from the sky, and about 15 kids with emo-zoot-chain encrusted trousers around their knees all mope by the camera, simultaneously not looking at the camera and giving over the top tortured looks to it.

Then two goth chicks in black pleather corsets start some production with coffins and razor blades. A guy in a black pleather harness top starts singing something poig-nant and it ends up with everyone dramatically piercing their wrists with intact thorns on a bunch of black dyed roses.

i just came 'cross this thread...

thanks to spoon for the startup, this is needed.
i go through disk space like an addict when it comes to mp3s. ive had to take off almost all my vids and podcasts on my 80g zune just to have more room to move around.

i can get into almost all music ( i know i hate people who say that too )

the things i cant stand are
ANY country song on the radio after the mid 80s. i love the old stuff slim whitman, h. williams, cash, the story telling song... love em.
ANYthing emo
ANY punk/pop/emo/whiney angst B.S.
those are the first things that come to mind.

has anyone got into "Kings of Leon" ?
ive seen them a few times live now and they put on a great show. almost no difference from album to live, a big plus in my book.

I've *always* said there's simply two kinds of music: good music and shit. Further, you can break that down into good SONGS or SHIT songs. That's where I am.

Take that Lacuna Coil cut "Our Truth" from GH4/RB2 and that Lazy Eye tune by SSPU. The former, I never would've DREAMED of liking a song in that "genre." But, get to that chorus and it's over. Fuckin' great. I have to give a good hook its props, no matter WHERE it comes from. Christ, I have to give Marvin HAMLESCH props for writing "Nobody Does It Better" for Carly Simon in "The Spy Who Loved Me," and he's notoriously cheesy.

It's good or it's shit. No in between. When Jamiroquai came out with Emergency on Planet Earth, it took me by storm (for contemporary funk fusion). Then I hear this song a few weeks ago in a GROCERY STORE, and the hook was so fucking good, that I had to remember a line or two soes I could look it up. I was sick to my stomach to find out it was that ultra-choady heeb poser in Maroon 5 doing a song (Jamiroquai light) called "Sunday Morning." I can't lie--I gotsta give credit where it's due. Good music and shit--that's all it berls down to IMO (whether you're a musician or not).

There was a song that was used in a REALLY old Hendrie bumper (not by him, but by the doucheholes who made the clip). It was so muddy and unclear that I couldn't make out a single word (and the clip was 31 seconds). It sounded "Bowie'ish" during his wanna be Reznor period, but good.

So, a year ago, Tabasco says there's a site where you hold your microphone to your speaker, and it recognizes the waveforms, and shoots back the song. THIS MOTHERFUCKER WORKED ON THIS ONE!!! After YEARS of asking people and pulling my hair out, it was "Air Conditioned Nightmare" by Mr. Bungle. Fuck NO, I wouldn't have just rolled across that in my natural progression. It was AWESOME.
