^Dude, fuckin' THANKS for that! You don't know how goddamn long I've been trying to get that (and a handful of other older SK books). In fact, on EZN, some other cat's posting text files saying, "REPOST STEPHEN KING, ASSHOLES" (to that effect).

Ok... since Palahniuk reads the story "Guts" from his book "Haunted" and had it published online on his website, I thought I'd pass the story along to whomever wants to hear 20 minutes of cringe-inducing hell.

Again, the set-up is this:

Writers go to a retreat to write their masterpieces and it turns bad. Each writer is given an apt pseudonym reflecting their character. "Guts" is the story by the amazingly skinny Saint Gut-free.

From Wikipedia

While on his 2003 tour to promote his novel Diary, Palahniuk read "Guts" to his audiences. It was reported that over 35 people fainted while listening to the readings. On his tour to promote Stranger Than Fiction: True Stories in the summer of 2004, he read the story to audiences again, bringing the total amount of fainters up to 53, and later up to 60, while on tour to promote the softcover edition of Diary. The last fainting occurred on May 28, 2007, in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, where 5 people fainted, one of which occurred when a man was trying to leave the auditorium, which resulting in him falling and hitting his head on the door . Palahniuk is apparently not bothered by these incidents, which have not stopped fans from reading "Guts" or his other works.

^^'Lasco turned me onto this book taDAY (it's on the torrents), and I dove right in, and though he (Lasco) does a perfect job laying down the warnings, this passage was only part of a *trilogy* of similarly hideous yarns (hideous, but fascinating). I hate to admit that I'm digging this thing righteously, as such. This book (so far, for me) *is* that car-wreck and aftermath everyone wants to secretly watch. Enjoy your calamari. :tip:

I'll go ahead and upload the first part of "From a Buick 8"... if anyone digs it, I'll try to upload the whole thing in sections (it's a long-ass read, but one of the best he's written in ages). I usually juggle two at a time, and right now I'm between Salem's Lot and Desperation (which gets off to a pretty fuckin' wild start).

As long as I know there are at least two or three serious cats here, it's worth the effort (and I owe Russ a few as it is). :tip:

Wow. Between that and Duma Key, our tastes in King stuff are way different (no judgment passed, obviously). I've never been able to sink my teeth into the Dark Tower series (but a ton of people dig it), but it sure wasn't for lack of trying. I even *bought* the first audiobook on CD. When he officially retires from publishing, that's when I'll force myself to finally plow through it.

(One thing I *do* dig about the Dark Tower shit, though, is how he always brings small elements of that story into his other books--e.g. the Low Men in "Hearts In Atlantis," including their car; the actual Buick in "From a Buick 8," including the strange cat who abandons it, etc.)

The mixed narratives in Buick 8, especially the lead character (the old man) were one of the most interesting parts of that book for me. I was especially riveted by what the fuck came out of that flippin' trunk--you never knew what or how heinous it was gonna be, and each time it just got more and more bizarre.

KungFuJesus

I haven't really liked anything of his since the dark half... and that was a long ass time ago. Either I can't finish it at all or just don't dig it. I'm sure once he either retires or croaks I'll go back and read it all. Anything prior to the dark half is pretty much gold. Had to be the coke and booze.

This officially ends my years-long quest... (Rapidshare?! Ugh!). At least he uploaded just about everything.

I have to say, *don't* waste your time with "Everything's Eventual"--those stories are really of his weakest novellas I've ever read. That was a big disappointment all around. (I still can't recommend "From a Buick 8" enough---and "Duma Key.") :tip: (IMO)

*Edit: Reading "Desperation" over the last week or so and have to say, I can't think of a King book that fucking FLIES outta the gates faster and more intensely than this one does. That'd be my last recommendation, not that anyone's askin', 'course. :tip:

It's a great find, POM, but this fuckin' guy used "Rapid"share. I've already grown a long, white beard just getting three files down. (Not *your* fault, Russ--we're all stoked at the archive--just can't believe he didn't use one of the thousands of faster/easier free file uploaders.)

Dunno. Click on that sumbitch. I think an Anonymizer-type website'll hide your IP and let you download multiple files at once. I can't find one yet, and I've tried four. Jeezus.

If it's less than $20 for a single month (with anytime opt-out), and you don't own ANY King audiobooks, POM, it's WAY worth it just to savagely download every fucking link on this page. I sure as hell would, but I've ebay'ed most of them and then reauction them back. This is far better, obviously.

The really old stuff (and especially the short-story collections) you can't even find on the TORRENTS, so start out with the older shit (after you get Buick 8 of course... ;-)).

Wow, thanks Russ. How did you find this?

I've been hounding a guy on a geek forum for 6+ months to share certain King books. Other jerkoffs would come in and ask him to reload old ones I've already put up, etc. and I just kept PMing him about the 4 titles I wanted. Other dipshits were PMing him for other shit, so naturally, I started bitching that they should've gotten them while the links lasted, fuck what they want and post my requests next. He finally just posted everything he had.:-)

Ack! I just realized the one book he ain't got up in his schweet archive is "Cujo." Here's the rub: For AGES, there's only been ONE COPY of it floating around on the P2P's and torrents, etc., and it's absolutely JACKED. There are massive gaps, glitches, streaks of silence, and the entire thing is worthless--yet it still gets propagated.

That *will* be the one last audiobook I score and sell back off ebay.

Was that one of the stories they did in the early 80's movie "Cat's Eye"? I know they were all Stephen King based...

James Woods went to this place to help him quit smoking, and boy did they ever give him the motivation to quit.

This is way easy, daddy; you just download WinRAR from www.download.com (it's free). Then if the archive is in a group of parts, you put 'em all in the same folder, and right click on Par 1 and pick "Extract Here..." (in the folder you made). It'll automatically pull the others in as it needs 'em, creating a subfolder with ALL the mp3's neatly in order. Obviously allow the install to make shell associations/extensions so it shows up when you right click on shit. **Do *not* make it your default app for .ZIP files, though. Nuh-UH.

Talisman
Black House... getting part 1 now

next up...

That's a SUPER sound list, brutha. "The Long Walk" is on almost every King fan's top five novella lists.

I'm about 3/4 done with Salem's Lot and never knew a "vampire" book would freak my world so hardcore. I've always been a major King fan (started reading him only on vacations and plane rides... as you do, and then I realized in 20 years' time, colleges'll be studying his work in THEIR American Lit classes--no questions).

Buick 8 is a personal favorite based on the narrative (well, there are multiple, but one main driving one), and the hook of that story alone will keep ANYONE riveted and wanting more at the end. You've also got some good Frank Muller ones (he's the *best* reader in the history of audiobooks, and The Green Mile & Shawshank* are two of his best ...*pretty sure about that one).

Duma Key... it's got one of the best third acts of all his books and is read by a guy I hope reads more of his books (John Slattery--he's a stage/film character actor... he was in Charlie Wilson's War if you sawr it). He kicks ass reading that book, and I was glad I stuck with it. Make it one of the ones you listen to bit by bit as you crash out at night (if you're a headphones cat). Just keep the dl's in the background; work; then go to the next; even if it's just a few a day... that's what I've been doing, 'cept like 10 a day. :tip:

Hey, since some of us are on a big King jag here (well, this thread, anyway), there are two things I've noticed in almost every single King book:

1) He will, at all costs, whether in context, appropriate or not, shoehorn in the conjugation "had lain" --every - single - book. It's like he wants to let everyone know at all times he knows the past participle of "lay." I'll never understand this obsession of his.

2) In every single book or story since the horrid advent of Oprah Winfrey, he will also shoehorn a reference to "The Oprah Winfrey Show" (or a two-fer, and "Ricki Lake" as well) -- without fail.

I love the guy an' all, but ya know how once you notice something like that, it starts feeling like you're getting a bad sunburn? Zackly. :tip:

Dr. P

I downloaded a few of these for when I work out. But having a billion mp3's was kinda confusing. I'd keep losing my spot or sifting through files looking for the last one I was listening to.

For you Mac users, a very sweet little GUI AppleScript is JoinTogether (http://dougscripts.com/itunes/itinfo/jointogether.php), a little app that not only joins all of these together into one file, but makes them an "audiobook" that shows up in iTunes under the Audiobook category. That means it will always pick up where you left off, and you can change audio speeds straight from the iPod. Very nice.

Since I crash out at night to most of these, I'm probably the only one who benefits from them being broken into pieces. If I can't recall where in the story I was when I hit REM sleep, at least my player (which is set for 45 minutes) will remind me which track # I was on.

However, that utility YOU mention will come in pretty fucking handy as I've now got too many books on queue to save for nighttime only. I'm a start listening during the day soon, too. I'll get that shit for sure. Good'n. :tip:

*P.S. Russ, I've gone as far as to have bookmarked the page that has all the links on it, and I shit ya not, I've now gotten everything down (that I didn't already have) save for the dual-author books (of which I'm WAYYYYY dubious) and Dark Tower II onward. I think today I finally have to dive in while I can and get those. When I'm done with everything, I'll be dyin' for Dark Tower shit. (I heard King say that he pictured Robert Duvall as his Roland. Innaresting.)

I know we've now got quite a few Frank Muller fans here, and some great soul has just uploaded almost every single one of his award-winning reads (Thomas, Orwell, King, Grisham, etc.).

For example, the version of the Regulators in this thread is ripped at *really* low quality--the one on EZN is pretty high (worth the alternate). Get while the gettin's good, 'cause his shit is HARD to find on the internards. I've found that a lot of stuff Muller has read is usually supplanted with the really old, original audio TAPE versions, read by that robotic guy Booze pointed out who sounds like he read news reels from the late '30's.

My entire bandwidth is jammed to the gills right now as I'm getting EVERYTHING at once so it'll all be there in the mornin'. :tip:

Believe me, POM--this is really a once-in-a-lifetime chance to grab all the King stuff for free; there's a mortifyingly short supply on the torrents and EZN, so much so that, as I've mentioned, I've had to BUY a few on ebay, burn 'em, and then re-auction 'em back.

Shit, between Duma Key and Buick 8, I don't know which I'd start with. His two best post-accident books (his writing style changed dramatically after his accident, but the first two or three were sub-par; after that, he sort of got back into a whole new jet stream). I'd go with Buick 8 first, white negro. Can't rave enough about that book. :tip:

Oddly, it's been all his short stories which have been the most successful film adaptations (Stand By Me, Shawshank, etc.). King's really like Bob Dylan in the following way: the majority of his shit is considered classic, and then there's a bunch of random shit (novels AND shorts) that just blow ass.

Just hearing that he "inserted himself" into his own stories (I assume you're talking about Dark Tower stuff, or the stuff with co-authors) is freakin' me out. I'd appreciate any info on this as advanced warning. I won't be likin' sinkin' a bunch of time into a long-ass read and then hearing "Stephen, known as Kingski to his friends, was a rough and rugged ass-kicker, ready for anything..." Yeah, I'm queasin' up just HEARING this.

:tip:

lmao it didn't ruin the whole series, but it did kill the sixth DT book for me. He has inserted himself into a ton of books, the writer in Misery, the writer in The Shining, the writer in every other book. He has a serious hard on for writing about "writers". It's as if he honestly says to himself, "You know what my audience would really relate too? Me!" I have always looked past it until the DT though. He actually names this Character Stephen King, but no worries, he is an extreme pussy. Don't not read the DT stuff though, even if just for the fourth one, it is beautiful. No shit, that one is one of my highest rated books, but you have to read some real shit afterword to finish.

I'm with Wedge on that. I *bought* The Gunslinger, and I've tried twice to give it a go. I keep stopping about two-fifths through it. As I've said, I'm waiting till (a) he dies, or (b) he officially stops publishing (which he threatens to do after almost every book since Bag of Bones). Only then will I gear up and do my best to dive into the DT series whole-hog.

As for King insinuating himself into his DT books, I, too, thought you meant he *literally* puts himself (as SK) into the narrative. That freaked me out. I'm cool with him writing about writers (naturally, he writes what he knows and lets the fiction take its course from there), but if anything, I think it enhances those particular books. Ya really had me scared there for a minute, POM.

McCarthy's dialogue, especially read by Muller, is about as good as it gets. The trilogy was where I started, and out of sequence at first. But "All The Pretty Horses" and "City of the Plains"... both phenomenal. He can make two characters in a two-hour drive down a dirt road at night in a barely-running pickup-truck as engaging as anything you can imagine--he's incredible. :tip:

I can't really explain how horrid the SK character is in the DT books, but you will see... eventually.

I also found the Gunslinger hard to get into, I took me over a year of on again off again bullshit. But the next few flew by until that shitty sixth book.

Spoons- I got Desperation off of EZN. SK is the narrator, which you'd think would be a good thing, but it actually might not be. His voice is as goofy sounding as he looks. Still, the story really grabs you from the first paragraph.

What I was wondering is: did you read the companion book The Regulators as well? I got that one off of EZN also, and wasn't sure which one to read first...after some quick googling, I came to the conclusion that one should read Desperation first.

FYI All: I have been listening to The Running Man at work. Well, today I had a dentist appt for a cavity to be filled and thought I'd take my ipod with me to get in some chapters while they were working. NOT A GOOD IDEA. I was so pumped full of nitrous that I couldn't concentrate on anything. I listened to the same five minute passage about six times before I gave up and started some music. Now I'm gonna have to go back and listen to it again tomorrow as I am just now finally recovering. GD I loves me some laughing gas.

Man, I wish the nitrous did something for me, but it only makes me dizzy and wanna sock the hygienist in the face. I've had so much dental work in the last three years that the needles, even in the roof of the mouth, don't faze me at all (sad ta say).

Wedge, yeah, I ain't read no Regulators yet (it's on my drive, ready to roll, though). I'm not a big fan of King reading his own shit. He's NOT an actor, and when he tries to act, he acts poorly and it dampens the impact of the narrative. However, there are SOME moments where I'm glad HE'S reading certain things, because he'll describe something (or someone's reaction) in JUST the way it was intended, so no meaning or nuance is lost. He also gets all his pronunciations right, which is another plus.

But, as I say that, wait till you get a load of that "load" Rob Lowe reading "Dolan's Cadillac." You'll beg for King to read it. Lowe tries to do bad shticky voices, and one of 'em is a truck driver or someshit (from New England, of course) and Lowe puts on THEE WORST John Kennedy accent for this character. I almost puked. In fact, it was so bad, I had to put the headphones on my dolly and tell her, "Just listen to THIS!"

They can't all be Frank Muller, but lemme say again, John Slattery (who reads Duma Key) might be the second best in the business. Mare Winningham blows ass---oh, and King lets his WIFE read one of the short stories (I think the House on Maple Street). HO - LEE - CHRIST! She's got the WORST New England accent imaginable, AND (no bullshit), the poor old broad has a lateral LISP!!! Go check THAT OUT!

:tip:

P.S. I'm balls deep in "Desperation" and it still hasn't taken a bad turn yet. Yeah, King gets his Christian underpinnings in there, but he always does. It doesn't hurt the story, I don't think.

If I can spin one of my favorite Willem Dafoe phrases: "Well, bein' good's good enough..." :tip:

My Contribution (with important caveat):
I've never liked the music of Black Flag, but decades ago now, I was turned on to this book called "Get In The Van: On the Road With Black Flag" during the Rollins years.

Despite my distaste for their music and punk/post-punk in general, this book made a HUGE, lasting impression on me, and it also fuels my subsequent loathing of what Henry Rollins has become since this journal. Let's see... he's become a VH1 sell-out; an utterly full-of-shit, pretentious combination of a wannabe Spaulding Gray/Jim Carroll/Jello Biafra, but with none of the entertainment value, talent, or panache; he mistakes clubs full of painfully sycophantic laughter for him being some kind of "standup comedian"--probably his biggest delusion; and thinks he's now the "spokesman of our generation" through his little tours.

That having been said, it doesn't undermine what I thought was one of the best, most earnest, and interesting journals I've ever read (ONE of 'em, anyway). I decided to upload my clean copy of the audio version for those who care to indulge in this pre-dillhole Rollins masterpiece (IMO). *Note: The archive for some reason kept a double extension and I figure it'll either unpack itself or you can just delete the ".mp3" and leave the ".zip" extension at the end.

There's an elephant in the living room with all those Audible-transcoded audiobooks, and it almost makes it impossible to listen to 'em (even ones in the King list here, like "Regulators" for example... this happens a lot): You'll be listening for about 10 minutes, then a random clip from earlier will REplay itself for a full 30 seconds before resuming in the story, and then it starts to snowball and pickup *more* random clips to add to the original as you go. By the middle of it, you're hearing random clips strung together so often you can lip-sync them (very annoying).

It'll literally take going into a wave editor and manually hunting for each instance, deleting it, and resaving each file by hand. It's a real shame and happens all too frequently.

My only problem with Richard Dawkins and his ilk, is that he's just as big of a zealot as any religious leader/organization out there.

Just like Muslims, Christians, Mormons, Jews, etc. They too think that the world would be better off if everyone was more like them in their belief. Yet they don't see the connection because they think that their belief is based on facts and science whereas religion is based on stories that cannot be verified through scientific means.

I agree with Dawkins' views but he's very arrogant and pompous in his presentation... a common trait found amogst many religious leaders.

So I guess that's REALLY what my big problem with him is, not the argument or the belief system. But the attitude of "I'm right and your wrong and the world will be a FAR better place if everyone thought about things the way I do."

Booze
08-18-2008, 07:38 PM
Sav, all in all, i agree with ya. My view of all this is much the same as Hitch, in that I think we need to start moving away from the 'as long as they don't ram it down my throat' argument & a bit more towards the 'religion is not only ridiculous, but is potentially dangerous & getting more & more so' one.

But yes, Dawkins has come across as a bit of an arrogant tosser in the past. And I don't like it when Hitchens lets slip & resorts to insults, which he does a bit.

Btw, though, I think Dawkins realises that he holds the numero uno position in the 'all religious people are stoopid cunts' camp. Which may be why he's just made a series over here about Charles Darwin, in which he treads pretty soft, especially when invited to teach a class of school kids.

It's very good though, & I think it's designed to open the eyes of brainwashed chillens who have never questioned the bullshit they've been spoonfed all their lives.

Dr. P
08-18-2008, 08:30 PM

I agree to a point Sav, but the world would be a far better place if people didn't kill each other over religion. You take away religion, and you've got damn near world peace. Obviously, you'll always have gang bangers and similar violence, but that's mostly blacks.

You're kidding me, right? You can't actually believe that garbage... Where's the precident? There is none. The world has ALWAYS had a religious belief of some sort since the beginning of recorded history. So to assume that we would be better off without religion- is nothing more than a gay little utopian-esque pipe dream.

Keep in mind, I'm not defending religion here. I'm well aware of the fact that as a whole, religion has brought more harm than good to the world. I'm just stating that there's no possible way for ANYONE to determine that our world would be better off without it because our species has never been without it.

Has anyone ever read/see Gulliver's Travels? The people he visited didn't have any religion. Instead, they argued and fought over other issues. Sure, the storyline applied those things were a metaphor for religion but it was also a metaphor for the human condition- that being that it's in our nature to fight for what we feel is best for others regardless of its side-effects.

A belief in a god is not a bad thing. It's how far people are willing to take said belief and what lengths they will go to with it for "the greater good" that is bad. Like I said, if there was no religion, we'd just be killing others over something else.

And I'd even go farther and argue that we like to fight for what's in our best interests, as it's in our best interests for more people to believe like WE do to 'preserve the tribe'. A need to group up and convert over others.

Folks tribe up based on who looks/thinks like them - I've learned this very painfully lately - and over time become anti-'people who don't'. It can be about which end of an egg we break into first, or religion or lack thereof. We'll always find something to fight about unless we somehow evolve away from that or collectively agree to knock it off.

I feel an uncomfortable thrill when I hear Hitchens or Dawkins or other atheists say that no one should have religion - but I think what *I tend to interpret* when they say that is that people should just believe true things and not made up stories (and Matt Dillahunty from Atheist Experience show always says exactly that). I think most people would agree with that readily, but they don't lump THEIR religion in with the 'made up stories' category (I didn't either when I was 'religious/spiritual;).

I don't think anyone is crazy enough to think that there would be no arguments if religion went away, Sav. However I think it's perfectly reasonable to think that disagreements and disputes have a better chance of being being worked out with little or no bloodshed if both parties don't feel like their personal, invisible Sky-Man is on their side and will destroy the other if we don't get our way. You can't have a reasonable, logical discussion about issues if your illogical and unreasonable religious beliefs have some bearing on the outcome.

I don't dispute that at all. I just don't buy this- "All wars are because of religion" crap. Or the "The world would be better off without religion" comments... Okay, I actually do think it would be a little better off, but not much. Look at America for example... Politically, we're pretty secular and yet America has been in at least a dozen wars. None were religiously motivated.

In fact, if you look throughout history most wars were religiously based, but a good deal of them were based on other things like resources, land disputes, and just the desire to conquer (see: Ghengis Khan).

I just read a book called Water Wars where the author chronicles numerous disputes throughout history where the war/conflict was started because of water. And the author predicts that fights over water and other natural resources will be the prime motivaters for future warfare.

Hey.... maybe Water Wars is in audiobook format as well. Sorry for steering off topic. \\:D/

      Me sorry. I wasn't trying to directly be an asshole to you. I just get irritated when I hear that "arguement" because I personally don't feel that it is accurate to say that society would be at peace without religion. I have ample proof that would suggest otherwise (read my above comments and see: Russia vs. Georgia conflict).

I fully agree that violence is part of the human condition. I wouldn't agree that America is "pretty secular" though. Even the candidate on the left has to profess his undying faith to have a chance at being elected. Religion has everything to do with our policies. Mostly everything I said in the prior post was for a chance to get in a black joke, though.

And I don't like it when Hitchens lets slip & resorts to insults, which he does a bit.

Religon has had an influence in our country's leadership. But it's still secular in the sence that we do not have a state sponsored religion and it's very secular compared to the political policies set forth by other great nations throughout history.

And for the record, your shoehorning of a black joke into your last post was not lost on me. lmao lmao

That's exactly why I have no respect for guys like him even if they do share my point of view. How can a person with such arrogance gain any cred and/or respect for what they believe in, when all they do is drop sophmoric insults at people just because they believe in something else?

Calling people stupid and idiotic for believing in a God, isn't exactly a great way to get them to see to reason. Calling religion a childish fairytale isn't exactly great PR for atheism... All it does is piss people off and make them glad they aren't a smarmy know-it-all cock like that atheist dick.

People believe in God because they learned the belief like they learned how to read, write, add and subtract. The belief in God is as programmed as any trained skill is. So for someone to then walk up and say "Hey stupid- you're religion is stupid because it makes no sense and you're stupid for believing in it." Is a huge piss in the face cocksucker, way of dealing with people.

Actually, Hitchens was attacking Falwell for being a homophobe, saying that America invited the 9/11 attacks by turning away from god, and being a judgemental douche in general. With everyone crying out what a great man of god he was while he was alive, there was Hitchens reminding us all that Falwell was sanctimonious, self-righteous blowhard. Personally, I felt Falwell deserved the criticism.

In Hitchens defense, Hannity & Colmes comes on at night which means Hitch was probably finishing up his third bottle of Scotch for the day. He was a bit cantankerous, but for me that adds to his charm.

That's just a friggen weak ass excuse, B. Come on! The guy kept droning on about how they invited him to their show and blah blah blah. He's supposedly smart enough that he should have figured out that Hannity & Colmes is a debate show. Did he actually expect to share an opinion and not have it challenged (especially by Hannity)?

I'll give you the assertion that he was probably tired and loaded up on gallons on Scotch. But still, he seemed to be a little too irritated by the fact that Hannity, Colmes and the other guy- were disgusted by his remarks.

To me, he came off as if the whole world should rejoice in Falwell's passing just because he is.. That's not very pragmatic.

ps. His cranky bitter and snobby mood was mildly amuzing though.

He knew he would be challenged, he just felt it was absurd to invite him onto the show to say his point and then be chastised for stating it publicly. I've seen enough of Hitch to know that had they stuck to discussing the points he was making rather than attacking him for making such "insensitive" and "hurtful" statements things would have gone much smoother. Hitch thought he would be debating the merits of his statement, not get slapped on the wrist by Hannity in a nun's outfit for being "mean".

"Hitch" obviously doesn't know how Sean Hannity rolls then (and I really doubt that). He pulls that shit with guests all the time. And Hitchens KNOWS that because everyone knows that Sean Hannity is the Church Lady of political debate. So I'm not buying that excuse either.

I liked "Sun Dog" okay, but "Secret Window, Secret Garden" is grabbing me. I didn't see the Johnny Depp film, but I think I know the "twist" in the story. It's still good, regardless.

Just avoid Everything's Eventual--maybe King's most embarrassing writing (especially the 1st-person dialogue on the title story---Ugh-nuh... he needs to quit trying to write "hip teenagers").

I still say Duma Key (especially the audio book with the great John Slattery) is his best post-accident book. It does grow on ya.

I don't care what anyone says, Matthew Broderick is gay as a French horn, and he reads "The Monkey" from Night Shift. Philip Pullman does the reading of his The Golden Compass series and he has (IMO) a terrific voice for it.

The voice actors that play each role in it are *excellent* - they're all stage actors and you can tell - they actually know how to act and speak and project, and not just 'mumble' like some audiobook readers do.

Edit: Maybe an exception to the 'woman reading audiobooks suck' is Amy Sedaris doing selective voices for her brother's books. She's not the main reader, but her voices add a lot to the recording.

POM, empty your cache on your browser first and foremost. Secondly, if you wanna download more than one file from Rapidshare at a time, try this: www.anonymouse.org and then paste the URL into THAT bitch. Then download.

But, chances are, just empty cache and try again. I ain't had any problems. Also, use a different browser if it fucks up beyond all this. :tip:

BTW, I'm still working on Pet Sematary (it takes a fuckload of RAM to pull all this off). I just ordered another 4GB for my Mac Pro (should be here tomorrow--fuck yeah). I'm a max this whore out at 16GB soon.

Wedge, "Secret Window, Secret Garden" has its hooks in my ass as well. As far as celebrity readers go, no one beats William Hurt (3/4 of "Hearts In Atlantis") and freakin' James Woods. Woods reads a couple others, but I can't think of which offhand.

The thing that really fucking disturbs me, though, is how King (with his EGREGIOUS taste in filmmaking) has gotten a hard-on for this fucking hack Craig Baxley, who's like the Ed Wood of this generation. From what I've read in King interviews of late, he's going to keep giving this talentless shit-heel a lot more of his material so we can all see the works in their heavily censored glory on the USA cable network or straight to DVD. King REALLY needs to get his head out of his ass and let Darabont and other greater talents handle his material. I got a knot in my stomach just reading his "Author's Note/Forward" of Storm of the Century. You'll puke, too.

Alright, I finally finished removing all that SHITTY-ASS hiss from Pet Sematary, and now I'm downsampling it to 56k so I don't grow a long, white beard uploading those whores. Comin' soon...

I'm gonna finish Secret Window over the 3-day weekend. Don't tell me if the ending sucks ass 'cause I don't wanna know...:tip:

Well, I was telling my dolly about the book, and she goes, "Shit, that sounds really familiar--was the house on a lake, and blah blah?" To my major chagrin, I look it up on IMDB and some hack made the movie (poorly) with Johnny Dope and John Turturro. Ugh. I was so curious, I downloaded an .AVI of it on EZN and yep ... *sniff* *sniff* egg salad!

Ever since Kubrick interpreted The Shining masterfully, throwing King into hissy fits, he declare he was going to "have much more of a hand" in who does his movies and "how." This explains countless straight-to-video coilers and censored horseshit made for the USA network and his Baxley hard-on, etc. Shit, look at "Thinner"--one of the worst EVER, and "Dreamcatcher"?!!! King said he LOVED Kasdan's version. Holy fuck. It's a travesty. Darabont's the only exception, but I do know that Tobe Hooper's got control of "From a Buick 8" and it's in the can. Let's PRAY they had a fucking budget!

Yo, Stevie: WRITE BOOKS--STAY THE FUCK OUT OF MOVIES, JERKOFF!!! Leave that for the big boys.

P.S. "Secret Window, Secret Garden" is solid, but I now wanna see "The Sun Dog" made into a flick before "The Long Walk" now (it would take some serious talent to pull of that ending, anyway). "Dolan's Cadillac" just finished shooting in Duckworld. I have a bad feeling about that one.

You see the flick King wrote and directed...Maximum Overdrive? lmao Yeah...movies ain't his forte, if that movie's any indication, though I think he put his stamp on that one- it's sort of got that trademark King sense of humor about it. In Danse Macabre he talks about being hugely influenced by the b-grade horror flicks of the 50s and 60s, so I think that's just his sensibility. For better or worse.

^^Saw that w/my friend as kid (my madre took us), and I remember her first words as we left the theater: "Jesus, that Stephen King is the worst actor I've ever seen." How true... how true.

Sorry to hear that.

What a fucking GYP that shithole is. I couldn't BELIEVE the prices, and one lousy book a month--at the same exact price (and half the quality) as buying it off Amazon. Fuuuuuuuck ... THAT.

You should check out Easynews.com, Stick. All the books you can dream of... for free. :tip:

Yeah, I downloaded it and, it breaks Horrible Autobiography Rule #1... "My parents were born in...." <yawn>

Straight a narrative as the arrow he wore on his head. I'm still gonna finish it, though. I wanna hear how good Bernadette Peters was in the sack.

I'll check that out, Spooner, thank you. As for Bernadette Peters, the barn scene in Young Frankenstein should have been a good indicator.
