I see that memory from the Apple store is a lot pricier than 3rd party mac memory.

Is there much difference?

I have a 2.0ghz - 1gb - 80gb Macbook.

Does that have 2 memory bays? I'm thinking of lobbing another gig of ram into the bastard.

What kind of lifespan can i expect from a Macbook?

Thanks.

I hear that the only real caveat to buying third-party memory is buying "quality" third-party memory. I have seen reports of people who buy very cheap memory for their Macs and had stability problems afterward. Which brands are considered "quality" are debated all the time. Coach sent me a link for some memory sold through NewEgg that had good reviews and was reasonable in price.

You'll want to do a little research and see if it will work for your system.

Since you have 2GB, I'm betting that their are two bays and each one is being taken up with a 1GB chip. I don't think 3 GB will be an option for you. You'll probably have to get two 2GB chips.

Thanks - i was just looking at corsair memory. 70 euro for 4 gb!

I have 1gb in mine. 2 x 512mb

I think i'll hold off until i notice any performance dips.

I've used it a fair bit since i got it and it still runs perfectly. f microsoft.

I've been running with that RAM from Newegg for 2 months now and it works great. I've noticed a difference running Photoshop and other memory intensive apps. Seems good to go.

Could anyone recommend a decent & free download manager for mac?

Thanks:tip:

I couldn't find a free one anywhere. I gave up and bought Speed Download and it's really good.

Yer ain't kiddin', Diddy... finding warez for the Mac is a WHORE. I'm a have ta buy that, too.

BTW, I just picked up a SCHWEET WD 650GB SATA drive for my Mac (only $109 at Newegg, great reviews, too) and the beauty of just snapping it into the bay and clicking one button to initialize it in two seconds... ahhhhh... it's good ta roll w/a Mac. Who knew. :tip:

Edit: Belasco, I just downloaded and installed that application--it's only bringing me from 500kbps to 517-530. Are you getting more boost than that from it?

hmmm...paying for software feels like incest but i really need a download manager on the mac for ezn.

Hey spooner what kinda mac did you get again, an iMac?

I lashed 4 gigs of ram into mine - she's flying now. I've only got an 80gb HD though. Might have to upgrade that soon.

I stuck with the default installation of Speed Download and 500kbps is about what I get most of the time. It brings in flicks in 15 to 30 minutes generally. That's fine for me, but I know that it's highly configurable and can probably be tweaked to allow more connections at one time for speed boost.

Hey guys-someone's put "Adobe CS3 Design Premium NL" in alt.binaries.mac.applications, but I can't tell if it's complete or not. First I clicked on the PAR viewer, and it looked like all the files were there. Then I clicked on it AGAIN and it looked like there were some missing. Finally I refreshed the page and checked it yet again and they appeared to be all there. Maybe you guys can check it out.

Spooner and other mac kids, You probably know this already but If you're going to to be storing huge 6gig'ish single files on external drives (backed up dvds, final cut works in progress, imovie projects, or other big shit) you'll need to have your external drive formatted to "mac os x extended journaled" or some other format that allows ginormous files. Best decide before hand if you want to do this or try to move a huge file over and see if you have the problem right off the bat. I backed up my system with Time Machine to an external wd 500, but ran into multiple errors when I tried moving backed up dvds that were over 5 gig per file, and after noodling around I learned the schmuck at the Apple store should have told me to do that. Live and learn.

Oh, b'leeme... I already formatted that massive 650 for OS X/Extended Journaled. Each week, I cut that many more ties to Microsoft. I should be 100% MS-free by the end of the year.

yep. one of the early intel imacs before they put glass in front of the screen. I guess it's maybe 1 1/2 years old. I'm pleased as punch with it after switching from a geriatric frankenstein pc that was on constant deathwatch for 5 years.

Hmmm, all this Mac talk from NON-fags has made me wish I played around with the Mac at my last job a little bit more. The lady's laptop is getting up there in age (about 4.5 years now) and I'm thinking about replacing it with a MacBook from all this positive talk here.

Howards Turn

I'd highly recommend the switch unless you're totally dependant on PC only applications.

Either way if you pick up an intel macbook you can dualboot with xp or vista very easily. The latest mac os comes with a utility that allows you to partition and install xp/vista and it runs very well apparently. I'm happy with the mac os though to be honest.

I've had one 6 months and from what i can gather;

No viruses, no spyware, no crashing or stalling, much faster boot up than windows, much easier to use and maintain than windows pc.

I'm planning on using it to record music very soon which from what i've seen is very powerful for that use. I just gotta get a decent mic for it.

Heaps, if you're rollin' on a 4- to 5-year-old laptop, you're definitely gonna *need* to upgrade soon, and as Howie said, there's no longer any reason to stick with Windows (thanks to the Intel deal and Leopard). Besides dual booting, you can use a program called VMWare Fusion and actually open a Win XP OS inside a window in Leopard (which is what I do).

I'm shackled to Excel for work, so even though they make it for the Mac, the shortcut keys I'm used to and a bunch of other utilities keep me having to use the Windows version, but outside of that, I don't stray from this OS X.

Ed, MS-free in terms of computing, not gaming. But, if I get another RRoD, I may throw this fucking box out into the lake for good.

Yeah, I was rollin' on a new Mac Pro at work and runnin' XP on it. It was pretty schweet. I never did much more than use the Internet on the Mac partition, though. I'm definitely gonna check out Mac as soon as that lapper dies.

I'm tryin' also to hold on to my desktop for at least another year or two, but it might be tough since I just maxed out the RAM on this sucker.

Mine has been fantasti. ZERO issues so far. Photoshop runs better, web browsing is better, the cool stuff I can do with my iPhone is better, Garageband kicks ass, iMovie is schweet, all of the DVD burning/converting/ripping apps work WAAAAAAAY better than on a PC... the list goes on.

One of my favorite things are the keyboard shortcuts. There is very little that actually has to be done using the mouse. If I were you, Bill, I'd try Excel on the Mac Pro of yours during your downtime. I think you'll prefer the keyboard strokes better on the Mac than on that PC of yours. And honestly a lot of the common ones are the same on both machines (copy, paste, open new, quit, etc.).
