View Full Version : Bookmarks gone? WTF!?!

So my PC was just going slow as a motherfucker so I gave it the old cold boot and just turned it off. I tried to do a restart, it just wouldn't close shit, all programs not responding, etc. So after starting back up everything was cool and fast again. Except one thing... 80% of my GD bookmarks are GONE! WTF Oh my Go! Anyone know how I can get all my favorite sites back?

Firefox or IE? Firefox has done weird things the last couple of days to me, too.

Go to the site, and under the book mark tab, select "Add Bookmark"

Do a search on your pc for bookmarks.html

or seach for bookmarks.* you might find a backup version of your bookmarks file titled bookmarks.bak . Check file size and date to choose one that might be as complete as possible. If its more complete than your current bookmarks.html file you can rename the bak file it to bookmarks.html. Good luck.

The search Fu mentioned should find them if the file isn't corrupted.

Once you've recovered them, I recommend setting up a "Bookmarks" widget on a Google page or a myYahoo page.

Sorry Russ, that sucks.

After having had that happen myself I got a program at the above link and put in on a 2gig flash drive. I use it at work and to sync up my bookmarks on my home machine so I always have a back up. I've even stopped dragging a lap top to work as I can just jack the flash drive in one of the hotel comps and away I go.

Do a search on your pc for bookmarks.html

When I do this, I get an Internet Explorer page called "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\defaults\profile\bookmarks.html" None of my bookmarks are there, though.

Check for anything that looks suspicious in c:\documents and settings\<you>\application data\mozilla\firefox\profiles\xxxxxxxx.default

Mine has a "bookmarks backup" folder and a bookmarks.bak in there.

Thanks Nate! Good Go, there are a shitload of 'em (I had folders for sports, radio, fish, funny, fourms, banks/creditcards, etc.) Is there anyway to import them or do I have to open them one at a time in IE, cut/paste to Firefox and resave? Worst thing is, when I saved a site with a password -I typed the password out to I could log in easily.

Close Firefox, back up your current bookmarks.html to some other name, then copy one of the correct bookmarks files to bookmarks.html.

Switch browsers for porn. Opera is perhaps the best for that and it's easy to delete all yous track.

^I used to do that. Then I forgot I had stuff there for a while and my mother in law just happened to be at the apartment when the movers were taking the bed apart.

Nate, I'm not sure I understand. I close my browser, backup the bookmarks.html to "Monkeyspank.html, but copy correct bookmarks? to the old one?

Well, you said "Good Go, there are a shitload of 'em." So I'm assuming you found a recent backed up one? Either bookmarks.bak or bookmarks-2007-10-??.html in the "bookmarkbackups" folder? So copy whichever file has all your bookmarks as of recently to bookmarks.html and you should be good to go.
