Anyone here old enough to remember when Andy Kaufman was doing his thing? He has got to be a direct influence on Phil. I think Phil has more of an appreciation for pure comedy then Kaufman did, but desire to push the limits of what an audience will put up with and really have the audiences reaction be the point of the humor is the same.

He was way ahead of his time. I remember back when I was a kid not many people liked him and took everything he did seriously. Even the Wrestling with women he did, there were very few people at that time that figured out that it was all a joke.
One of my favorite stories was from taxi cast member that talked about the meetings they had with him. He'd always show up with his walkman (Which was the latest and greatest thing at that time) people would always wonder what he's listening too. So one day somebody asked him what he was listening too. Andy gave the person his headphones and it ended up that he was listening too some Hindu tape language tape (If I remember correctly) . Man that's hardcore even when he wasn't on the air he was playing jokes on people.
Another one of my favorite things that he did was after one of his performences he treated everybody in his audience to milk and cookies.
Since we are talking about Andy does anybody actually think that he staged his death? I don't and I'll tell you why. He would have poped his out by now saying something like "Remember me!"(Which would have been hilarious).

Phil's satire is funnier and smarter than anything that Kaufman did IMHO. Kaufman's stuff was more like performance art than comedy although I did laugh my ass off when that wrestler f'ed him up on Letterman. The guy died when I was 14 so maybe I missed something.

Nah, you didn't miss anything, your analysis was right on IMO, except I saw the wrestling thing too, wasn't that funny to me,
and I live for satire, and long run-on comma laden sentences. I think I heard Phil say how great this guy was, but I don't
ALWAYS agree with Phil, just mostly.

Kaufman is funny when you realize it was a put-on. The major difference to Phil is the fact that Phil says right out that it is a put-on. Kaufman died and his buddy Zmuda had to write a book before people fully realized the put-on. And like I said, Kaufman admitted that he didn't have much of a sense of humor. But there is a common thread between the two. Like Phil took Kaufman's sensibility and made it funny.

Andy was genius, no doubt. I remember the wrestling gig and then next week he would be playing Latka on taxi and mix-in a Tony Clifton lounge act. his lettermen apperances were brilliant. truly ahead of his time. sacha baron cohen's act reminds me a little bit of Andy, but the cool thing is he never broke charactor...not once, never a sly wink. and he went to his grave still in charactor.

I have to admit, the whole wrestling thing where he was fighting women was pretty funny. The guy had his moments, but again, it's the case of someone becoming much more important because of their death.
I can't believe I'm responding seriously to this thread.

Andy's brand of humor was ahead of it's time. I'm not saying he's a genius or was "in touch" with something that made him a genius. He was a good schtick comic who's sense of humor was about 10 years ahead of it's time. Most people hated him during his tenure.
toddvideo
01-09-2008, 07:36 PM
true, many people loved him as latka on taxi but many more hated him for his wrestling schtick, tony clifton charactor and because he would never fess up to it being an act. Latka does resemble a little bit of the Borat charactor.

01-09-2008, 07:58 PM
I have to agree with beans on this one. I never thought any of his characters or schtick was funny.
Wait... why the fuck are we discussing this now???

I liked it best when he played the foreign bloke on Taxi that talked like a baby. That was genius & way ahead of it's time. He was doing it in the late 70's & nobody else did it until the early 80's. Brilliant.

I wouldn't call him a genius, after all he was a Yank.
