So i am thinking of getting my mom a computer for christmas. She would only be using it for stuff like surfing the net, burning CDs, playing bioshock, and maybe messing with photos a little bit. So it doesnt have to be a real powerhouse machine. Anyone have any suggestions as to makes or models to look into or to avoid?

If she already has a monitor, a MacMini. It's small, it works great, and Mac means less virus/spyware tech support from you.

I was thinking the same thing, but she has no monitor. so i looked at the imac and that looks pretty nice, plus i dont think it would scare my grandma too badly. But the mac mini was my first choice, and then i remembered the monitor issue. How much would it cost to get a decent monitor. Like i sad she doesnt need the best monitor in the world. but i would like to get them fairly decent flat panel. The mac minis look to start aroud 6 or 7 hundred and the Imac at about 1200.

I'm confused. Is it for your mom or grandma? Only askin' cuz, I'd get my grandma an abacus, my Mom would need something better.

My grandma stays with my mum, so it would be for both.

I got my folks a laptop a few years back. That really is the best way to go IMHO. Easier to maintain, put away and clean. I think it was a gateway for like 900 bucks.

Buying the computer is only part of the expense. Are you going to comp them some sort of dsl or cable internet access? Maybe 10 years ago dial up was an option but nowadays interweb pages are so fricking huge that it is inhumane to ask young much less old folks to wait for them to load. Get them something so they'll be able to check out the weather and Drudgereport. I'd go with a mac if only so you can tell them not to worry about virus'''''es''es.
Mac mini FTW. Just get 'em a flat panel for ~$200.

i think that will be my plan. I'm gonna look into a flat panel for ~200.
Plus it will be hella funny when they open up that little mac mini. And go what is it? And i say "Its a computer."
www.newegg.com for the flat panel.

I know I get irritated when my grandma calls me up asking whether to harvest or save a little sister.
