Any of you cats telecommute? Once I get settled in at my new job, I'm hoping to convince the new boss to let me telecommute...at least a couple days per week. Since the shit I'm doin' requires an expensive system with expensive software, I'm lookin' at some of those PC remote access things...any of you guys use them? Are they practical to access potentially large files and working with them? Pros? Cons?

I know a guy who uses gotomypc.com and swears by it. But he mostly brings up porn from his home PC to show at work, insteada the other way around.

Steve says:

http://www.realvnc.com/

"It's free, it's fast, works great"

They use it for support for a lot of their clients.

I'll defer to BTI on this one, but I've heard nothing but great things about gotomypc.com

I'll put up another vote for realvnc on account that it's free and reasonably secure. The problem you'll run into is dealing with large files. If you need to pull large amounts of data back and forth, it can get tedious. Hopefully, you can do everything you need on the PC you're remoting into.

Also, if something happens and your work PC gets shut off, I recommend setting up the REALVNC server to start automatically on boot-up. You'll probably want your PC to login for you automatically too, but that may be a security risk for your company that the boss doesn't want. Will your IP address will change when the computer reboots, or does your work PC get a dedicated IP? This could cause the kind of issues that may make gotomypc a better solution for you. However, with a little fine tuning, realvnc can do the job and work around any snags that may come up and cost you nothing.

I suggest gotomypc.com and a nice pair of Bill's Khakis.

Thanks for the replies. B, I'm not sure as to the specifics of the network stuff...right now I'm just in the research part of this thing. Working from home is something that my new boss actually kind of suggested but would wait to get into after a couple of months. I just started looking into it more recently because I haven't really gotten too busy at work yet. :tipofthecap:

Edit: Bill's Khaki's?

Third for VNC. I dunno how gotomypc works really... but it'd scare me if it runs through them such that they could potentially have access.

I don't have time to read the replies, but Heaps--without a DOUBT, GoToMyPC.com (the mostest pimpest Citrix technology) is as good as it gets. Between dragging and dropping between host and remote, and its overall ability to integrate with any Windows OS; speed, reliability, price.... Shiiiiiiiiiiiit, negro... that's all you had ta SAY!!!

I live by it.

I just thought this was worth re-quoting. Really, if you have any data you don't want the world to know, don't run it though a third party. Chances are that they won't sniff it and won't do a thing with it, but I wouldn't take those chances, still.

I dunno how I missed this post before, 'cause I KNOW I read Nate's and Llama's. With that kind of confidence, and with the earlier posts, it sounds like this is the right shit. I'm a ways off from makin' this happen, though...the new system I'm supposed to be using at work STILL hasn't arrived, and won't for a week or so. I'll be using a Mac and runnin' Windows on it. Those fuckers at Apple have been horrible with giving us updates on manufacturing, shipping, etc. If I were the one footin' the bill, I'd have cancelled that order a week ago.

Hopefully, I'll be able to get this shit together by fall. :tipofthecap:
