Make with it. I can't stand Best Buy. I've had some of the worst shopping/customer service experience ever in that store. They simply won't ever get any of my money. I used to go to Circuit City occasionally, mainly because they were my client, but now they are almost as bad as BB. I order on-line whenever possible, usually from Newegg.com. Lots of other great places on-line. If I shop locally, I look at Costco to see if they have what I need. Anyone...Bueller...anyone?

Frys (http://www.outpost.com/) has always been good. Costco when they have good stuff. I took a laptop back over a year after I bought it at Costco.

Best Buy or Frys. I do a painful amount of research before I actually purchase anything though. It's really quite embarrassing.

True.

Yes, I must give credit to Fu for listening to my constant confusion/research analysis over what is the better product to buy. I believe it only took me a month to finally pick out a digital camera, two or three weeks on my portable dvd player...you get the idea.

Online: Ebay or Newegg.

In person: BB or CC.

Edit: I'll ONLY go to Ebay if I can find it cheaper there. Even then, the seller has to have over 99% positive for me even to think about it. I NEVER get memory cards from Ebay. I'll go to one of the stores for something I need or want now, or if it's for something that's under $30, give or take, and I know EXACTLY what I'm getting before hand. I haven't had a negative experience at one of the stores, yet. *knock, knock, knock on wood*

Anal retentive
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search

ŷThe term anal-retentive (or anally retentive, anal retentive) derives from Freudian Psychology, although in common usage the original meaning has been altered. This term is an extension of anal, and can be used interchangeably.

Common usage

Conversationally, the term is often used to describe a person deemed to be overly obsessed with minor details. Its roots are said to be from Sigmund Freud.

The term is often used in a derogatory sense to describe a person with such attention to detail that the obsession becomes an annoyance to others, and can be carried out to the detriment of the so-called anal-retentive person. This term also tends to be offensive and used in the wrong context.

Origins

In the psychology of Freud, the anal stage is said to follow the oral stage of infant/early-childhood development. This is a time when an infant's attention moves from oral stimulation to anal stimulation (including the bowels and bladder), usually synchronous with learning to control their excretory functions, a time of toilet training. Those whose "obsession with detail" (such as that required to learn to retain feces) continues into later life are often said to be "anal retentive", as opposed to "anal expulsive". Some believe this to be a mild expression of obsessive-compulsive disorder or obsessive-compulsive personality disorder.

Thanks Phre...oops AB! :poke: I admit, I am quite OCD. Fu can testify to that as well.

Now, back to the electronics thing. I'm thinking of ordering a Dell computer b/c my cousin can get a discount and I need a new one. Anyone have one? If so, would you recommend it?

I was responsible for the computer purchasing at my last job and all we got were Dells. Seems to me they are fine for a internet/ email box if that's all you're looking for...good price after all. But ever fourth one or so that we bought (over a period of 5 years) had a defective hard drive. Simple enough to replace but it didn't give me too much confidence in the hardware.

Dells aren't great. Always buy the hardware replacement plan (we generally go with Silver at work).

Newegg is great. There's some place on the web from New York (they were big in teh catalog market in the 80s and 90s) that's great for appliances, I got my microwave from them. I'll try 'n dig up the name.

I like Best Buy, but I won't swear by them. I go to wherever I am able to get the best overall value for my money. If it's Best Buy (although it rarely is) I'll go there. If it's Costco, then they get my business. If it's on the interwebs, that's cool too.

And, if I could offer any substantial advice here. It would be to have patience when searching for a product. Wal Mart doesn't always have the lowest price regardless of what they want you to believe. 90% of the time. I find a better deal at Costco or Fred Meyer <--- the second biggest grocery/retailer in America.

And there's this little run down hole in the wall, "Ma and Pa" shop in my town called Ducks. And I tell ya.... No one beats their prices. Walmart doesn't even come close. I don't know how those cats do it, but I probably don't wanna know.... Yesterday, I just bought 6 very high quality MTX speakers for my car. I paid $130. And I bought one of those fancy new Pioneer decks that does cassettes, DVD's/CD's, and MP3's. With the motorized tilted face and all the bells and whistles for only $249.... Ol' Sam Walton can't even touch that shit for that price!

Fry's is pretty solid. Prices are higher than what you would pay online, but they sell f'in everything. Most of the ones here in Houston are quite a ways away from me which is why I don't shop there often. There is a Microcenter close by. It's not a big chain, but the stores are nice and the sales people are more helpful and educated than anyone at BB or CC.

How 'bout Radio Shack? Anybody darken their doorstep? About the only time I go there is if I need some funky connector or weird adapter.

It's funny you say that T-Boss! 'Cuz around here, a lot of the "Radio-Hacks" are changing their image and steering away from the obsure old-school ham radio transmitter style shit, to a more "refined" and contemporary feel. More car audio, more home theater, more personalized stuff (MP3's, gaming sytems, etc.)

Their products still suck, but at least they're trying a new approach.

Ya know that all the Radio Shack guys quit their jobs at the local comic book store so they could make a career "upgrade" to that shit house.

Do they still ask for all of your contact info if you need some random $0.75 switch, rechargeable batteries, etc?

I bought some earbuds there yesterday, and no phone number asked. I always give 'em 867-5309, and they never question it.

They always give me funny look when I say no when they ask for my number.

Why do these stores need my number, anyway? If they wanted to talk to me so fucking bad, they wouldn't leave me on hold for half an hour when I call their service department.

Rad Shack is the dump where HP told me to drop my laptop off when it died while under warranty. Then it magically came back with porn and viruses on it. Never, never, ever again.

No. If you want an inexpensive computer, go Lenovo. My work uses them and they are relatively cheap, and relatively reliable. The Dell I have at home is fine, as long as you don't want to actually load additional software (such as games) onto it; then your odds are about 50-50. I have plenty of harddrive space and (theoretically) adequate RAM, but I get an inexplicable error message about 1/2 the time I try to install ANYTHING.

There are some contractors at my work who are developing new software for the bank. I was talking with one guy the other day and he told me he's still using an old Lenovo T42 laptop because his employer switched vendors, and he'd rather use his old ThinkPad than a new Dell.

I used to be a big Dell fan years ago, but it's not the same company nor are the computers built as well. I still have one or two left--one of them in fact has been running 24/7/365 for about 6 years.
