View Full Version : New Tarantino flick bombs; anyone here see it?

So...according to Drudge, the new movie Grindhouse barely raked in half of even the lowest estimates of what it would do over the weekend, pulling in about 12 million. Anyone here see it? I didn't even notice any ads for it until about a week ago.
(P.S. I blame Robert Rodriguez...I loathe pretty much every movie he's ever made.)

Saw it with my daughter yesterday, who's a film major at UW-Madison. We both LOVED everything right up to Tarantino's portion, "Death Proof," which came off as pretty self-indulgent in my book. Some noteworthy acting and some truly unbelievable, non-CGI stunts...but otherwise it's long, unbroken stretches of Quentin sniffing his own farts, getting off on his trademark dialog. Screenwriting 101 says "Show Don't Tell," and talented as he is I wish he'd toss us a bone.
My seat was shaking from laughter up to that point, though. "Machete! They Fucked With The Wrong Mexican!"
Classic.

The film looks good, but I got the feeling from day one that mainstream audiences just are too young to even remember the Grindhouse days & exploitation drive-in flicks.

3 something hours is too fucking long, I thought about going but was put off by the commitment. Perhaps I'll go just the good bit Fish Whammy identified.

For what it's worth, the time passed quickly. If you can get through the long-winded portions of Death Proof, the payoff is breathtaking. Especially for me. I fell off the hood of a car once (stone sober, long story), so the climax had me in a full-body pucker.

Fantastic. Loved every bit of it.
"Death Proof" definitely has more dialog, but the climax is worth it.
Rodriguez's "Planet Terror" is chock full of blood, action, and camp. Rose McGowan is smokin' hot in the opening go-go dance too.
Been looking forward to this but haven't made it to a show yet. From what I've read here it seems worthwhile. "Sniffing his own farts."

Amen, possibly the most overrated director since Michael Bay.

Tarantino + over 3 hours = nirvana. Goin' to the 8:20 show tonight. Essential viewing.
Actually, until I sawr "Sin City," I couldn't STAND Rodriguez (very overrated). I don't read no comics, so Sin City was surprisingly entertaining to me (Mickey Rourke as "Marv"? Phenomenal. Who woulda guessed). Can't freakin' wait. :tipofthecap:

You're going to miss the experience by doing that. It will not be released as 1 DVD.
Each film (in the spirit of the grindhouse days) has been digitally aged and scratched. They've even taken it as far as to flash up messages (REEL MISSING - Sorry, The Management). The DVD's will be sold separately so as to include lots of extras and (it is speculated) those missing reels of film.
If you're inclined at all to see this, I highly recommend the theater experience. Both films are fun and those fake "Coming Attractions" are gold.

Just got back from the show. A few random notes on it (there's no way to spoil a grindhouse movie, so...):
Quentin needs to stop casting himself in his movies. Period. It's... it's just not a good thing when he does that.
One of my all-time favorite movie opening credits was Village of the Giants when I was a kid (watched it all the time, bought the DVD when it came out). Tarantino ripped off the theme song to that flick, so I was a little disappointed about that. And, I'm not a big fan of Tarantino writing women (in this, for sure); he just kinda writes dude dialogue (the usual Q.T. fare) and then has chicks try to deliver it (and needless to say, chicks just can't pull off that dialogue very believably). It wasn't enough to detract too much from the flick, though. I noticed the kiwi was maybe the worst actress he's ever put on screen, but it became clear she HAD to be a real stuntwoman, and it was my girlfriend who pinned her as probably Uma's stunt-double (just found out she was right). No wonder she stunk up the joint w/her acting chops. BUT, she did ALL them fucking stunts herself, so... there was an upside.
Did anyone catch the cameo from the short limey what's in Top Gear?! He played the sheriff's son in the hospital of the Tarantino flick (he barely pulled off the accent, but he's such a stiff, uptight guy that he couldn't even walk with his hands on his hips naturalistically).
All in all, as Tarantino said, you'll KNOW you went and saw a movie. True. I'm not a big fan of zombie flicks, so the first one (though it had some hilarious moments) wasn't as solid to me as the Tarantino flick (make no mistake that there's a disparity between QT's 'chops and Robert Rodriguez's). Kurt Russell knocks it out of the freakin' park. The ending had me laughin' out loud (in a good way). Great stuff (as Belasco wisely pointed out, "in a campy way" - campy is the key word; if you can't get into that vibe, you won't like the flick).
P.S. Quentin gave serious props/homage to my favorite flick "Big Wednesday" in there. How phat is THAT. A little love for Mr. Milius's masterpiece.
P.P.S. I went out to have a smoky treat as the end of the first one was evident. As I came back, two white-trash rednecks were LEAVING THE MOVIE, thinking it was over! No bullshit! They were smilin' and goin, "God DAMN that was some crazy shit! I could only shake my head. :tipofthecap:

By the way, Belasco actually UNDERstated this (believe it or not): Rose McGowan is maybe THEE most schmokin'-hot broad I've ever seen on camera ('specially in this flick). I never knew she had such a well-sculpted grille (the nose, lips, & peepers? Spec-fucking-tacular). She's worth the price of admission alone (even though Marilyn Manson revealed what a low-grade conniving whore she really is on the Stern show).

Dude, the rumor is that Robert Rodriguez bailed on his wife of 16 years and 5 five kids for this broad. She is co-producer on almost all of his films so he's gonna get hammered in the divorce.

So many here have the attention span of a flashcube. Once in a blue moon, I'll pop off with a 3-paragraph post, and it's like you wrote War & Peace. If I bother to DROP three paragraphs in this hellbroth, it's done for the edification of others who may want an impression about a flick they're debating seeing, not for the joy of seeing my fingers move fast. :larry:
Lemme try it again. Here's the version for Nate:
If like campy, see Grindhouse. QT should not be in his movies. Rose McGowan is hot, but whore.

Sorry to bump this thread, but I never knew there was a Grindhouse thread until now. With that being said....
I absolutely liked both movies. Rodreegays is on and off with me. I mean I can't even describe the level of anger/confusion/intrigue I have when it comes to his shitty movies.
I liked Desperato, then I hated it when I saw it a second time.
I was a huge fan of The Faculty until I saw it a second time.
I loved From Dusk 'till Dawn until the movie hit halftime, then I about barfed. Now, I like the whole thing.
The Spy Kids movies were clearly meant for kids and like most movie franchises, they got progressively worse with each new installment.
Yet Planet Terror was awesome. Unlike BTI, I am a huge sucker for zombie movies- no matter who lame. (just name one... and I guarantee that not only did I watch it, but I liked it.... yes, it's sad, very sad)
The Sav's 5 star review for Grindhouse is.... Russell kicks ass as usual, McGowan is a hot whore, zombie movies rock, stunt people rule and Tarantino is a self-absorbed douche who thinks that his presence adds to his movies.

Be fair to Quentin. He only casts himself in bit parts and they either die or are quickly left behind by the action of the main thread of the movie. Hell, if I was a producer I'd probably want to get myself into the movie even if it was only a 2 minute appearance.

I'll be fair. He can't act his way out of a wet paper bag. He went WAY over his skis in Dusk til Dawn, and really has sucked in every role he's cast himself in. He could be like Hitchcock and just have a cameo in the real sense of the word if his ego wasn't so fucking massive.
Edit:

Tarantino looks like a real-life Hirschfeld drawing. He's gotta be part Polish. Once I found out he dated Margaret Cho, I had to stop the presses on all knowledge of the guy, save for his solid taste IN movies and MAKING movies (I mean, if the guy sees the magesty of a flick like Big Wednesday, he's alright in my book--just, what's with dating fat, bisexual, unfunny, communist chinks?).

It's easy to forget how huge a kick up the arse Reservoir Dogs was. I went to see that film 5 times at the cinema, taking different people with me every time. I was evangelical about that flick.
Then Pulp Fiction came along & was even better. Fucking hell. Still the best film I've ever actually seen at the pictures.
The trouble with Tarantino's films these days is that the're full of women, & he can't write women for fucking toffee. Every word that comes out of their mouths just sounds like it's him saying it.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not looking for realism in a film like Kill Bill. But it's very off putting when you're looking at an uber-fit bird like Uma & you're picturing Quentin's giant freakish head.
Kill Bill just seemed like Tarantino's gigantic wank fantasy, & from what I've heard, this latest one ain't much different. It might be time for him to stop his 15 year long coke binge & make a proper film again.

I don't talk like a lady, I really appreciate seeing films where the females in it talk more realistically (I thought Kill Bill was written OK - but it's a kind of broad comic/manga style movie anyhow -- my tender eyes wouldn't be able to take his grindhouse movie.)

Glad I could get this in on the same page: Booze speaks gospel here (I can't concur more, to the letter, with what ya said, dad, ESPECIALLY about writing women--and I think I complained about that initially after I got back from that flick as well--it was my chief ailment w/the movie--that and him using a stunt-woman as a main "acting" character... her shitty acting took me RIGHT out of the movie). I'm not ashamed to say that like many here (and 'Lasco for sure), I've seen Pulp more times than Fast Times, GoodFellas, and every John Hughes-written film combined. It's the one flick that put America back on top of the heap with filmmaking--possibly permanently.
As for Kill Bill, it's one of my most interesting movie experiences. The first time at the theaters, I admit I was a little disappointed overall. Then I see "1" at home with subtitles and soak it in peacefully, and I start realizing that I'm watching one of the best-written/acted characters created in movie history (David Carradine). Then "2" comes out, and I watch 'em back-to-back... and ONLY then did I realize that movie is just ONE stinkin' tier beneath Pulp. Carradine's character (the writing)... he may not ever outdo that in his lifetime, IMO.

I thought the Kill Bill flicks were fantastic...I mean, the revenge concept is beyond hackneyed, and the film embraces a boatload of cliches...but they're so fun to watch and so well written that you don't think twice about it. And that's not simply because it's visually interesting; Sin City was stunning visually and otherwise more or less pointless. QT's got a real knack for narrative, he's a natural storyteller, and that's the difference.
And no, he's not a great actor, but I still like watching him on screen. He just doesn't give a fuck.

I think the thing that sets Quentin's movies above most of the other phlegm produced by Hollywood is that Quentin depends on dialogue, characterization, and story to carry his films. He's not trying to cover a thin story with flashy CGI effects and sheer spectacle. (I'm looking at you, George Lucas.)
As far as Quentin's bad acting, I always took it to be a throw-back to old 70s movies. They were always packed with really awful actors in bit parts.
