Comes out may first. "Snakes & Arrows" with summer tour!!!

Rush is one of my most favorite bands. And one of the best live bands i have ever seen. I cant wait to hear the new album. From what i read on neilpeart.net or com or whatever the album was recorded in under 30 days! There is a short sample of the first single on www.rush.com

I wouldn't mind if this leaked.

Cool. I saw Rush at the Starlake when they were on tour last, Ed. It was a good show. However, I hadn't heard their new (at the time) stuff.

I was there Heap.

Rush's new stuff is often a toss up for me, but what do you expect after 30 + years? You arent going to go gagagagaga over EVERYTHING. But i am always eager to pick up their new stuff to check it out. Very few "real bands" exist today. And rush is one of them. Love it.

My one Rush gig: 1982 at the Long Beach Arena. Golden Earring opened for 'em. I was stinkin' 13 years old and it blew my mind. I think I remember something about a shark and a motorcycle somewhere shortly after this album, though. Hell, I'll wait till they're opening for Penn & Teller and then check 'em out in a few more years in Vegas.

Dude you are making a huge mistake. Go see them on this tour. Shame on you for six monthes for missing the tour a few years back when they played all of 2112.

I have hoped for a rush concert where they play all the "LONG" tunes.

2112
cygnus x1 1 and 2
Bytor and the snowdog
Fountain of lamenth
The necromancer
La villa strangiato.

that would ROCK!

Im busting out my R30 DVD right now! :rush:

One of my best friends works for this high-end audio company and is worse than you with his Rush fanaticisim. He went back stage to meet the band a few times, said all were cool (if not quiet & shy) with the exception of Geddy, who acted each time like he was too cool for the room (which I find kind of comical).

I do agree, though, that seein' 'em play the entire 2112, while a tad high, would bring me back. Christ, I can hear the opening in my head as I'm typing and smell the bongwater in the old guest house we used to jam in as teenagers. Maybe NOT such a great memory... lmao

Bitchen Rush is fucking great, I saw them times last tour and they were as good as the couple dozen times I had seen them before. If anyone needs a bunch of Rush cds and a few dvd, check this out. I am selling a lot of 39 Rush Cds and 3 DVDs and everything else I own for that matter. Check it out.

I like Rush*, but the last "new" album blew chimp. God. It blew so much chimp that I forgot it's friggin' name! *checks music folder* UGH! Vapor Trails. I'm sure there's a gay sex joke to be made from the name.

* I spent my teen years reading Ayn Rand, so... yeah... it's sorta obligatory that I like Rush. ;)

Undoubtedly "Moving Pictures." It's not only what launched 'em into the American jetstream, but had zero filler in it; every second of tape was fuckin' great. Sure, I got baked in junior high and endlessly listened to the Necromancer and all that other shit, but ... The Camera Eye? Limelight? Red Barchetta? Vital Signs? C'mon... they never outdid that one.

Lyrics started getting a bit cheesy for me around "Grace Under Pressure"... and after that, my Rush-fan'dome drifted off like the guy in 2001 what got cut loose from the pod. Jesus, I even heard some later Rush track about five years ago about some gay guy and I couldn't believe how heavy-handed it all was. Anyone know what song I'm talkin' about? Hooooo boy.

My favorites: Roll the Bones, Grace Under Pressure, Counterparts, Hold Your Fire, Exit Stage Left, Farewell to Kings, Power Windows. If you haven't heard them since Moving pictures days, and want to catch up, get Roll the Bones and Counterparts. You will be rocking until their new one comes out! And on the last two tours they did By-Tor and the Snow Dog - nothing I would have gotten exited about until I HEARD it. Wow did that rock! No substances needed to appreciate it. I've never sparked leaf in my life (or read Ayn Rand either). And I wish they'd do all of Cygnus X-1, but I'll take part of it in a medley if I can't get the whole thing. One of my favorites! And if you haven't heard Vapor Trails, watch one of the last two live DVDs and see if you don't dig some of the ones they do from that - like Secret Touch - I wanted to scream at all the guys getting up to get beer - ARE YOU GUYS INSANE! You want to miss this for some BEER???!!!! Yeah I kind of like Rush!

Ed, back in the day Sledge here too was a HUGE fan of the Rush. In high school for a time I sported my Presto T-shirt and as a freshman in college I owned at least three Roll the Bones ones too. After that album was released my Rush interest began to wane for some inexplicable reason. I have never purchased any of their subsequent studio albums since but I do own Different Stages and Rush In Rio because I am partial to their live recordings.

I am going to find a way to see them if they schedule any tour dates in my area. I never had a chance to see them live in concert and who knows if they will ever tour again.

Favorite album: Signals
Least favorite album: (self-titled original)
Coolest album cover: A Farewell to Kings
Favorite song: A Passage to Bangkok Live from Exit: Stage Left

I used to think the same thing until I heard a couple albums from cover to cover. What's really been turning me off of Rush is not Geddy's voice, but my GD supervisor who listens to Rush ad nauseum. Although it hasn't been as frequent lately, it's not uncommon to hear Between the Wheels over and over and over again through his headphones.

Well, I have now listened to the album 3 or 4 times start to finish and...... Its AWESOME. i think its the best album they have released since i have been a fan. The production is fantastic and the music sounds "big" thats the only way i can describe it. Lifeson is on fire on this album. there is a bunch of 12 string accoustic guitar on it and some great solos. I swear i even heard a mandolin (sp?) once. And it reminds me of old rush in the sence that it has a real "feel" to it. You know in songs like madrigal, or the necromancer, and the part of 2112 where he first learns to tune and play theguitar, YOu know how those songs have a mystical feel about them that almost gives you a sence of being in a different time and place? Well there are numerous moments like that on the new record. Again, it "feels" like old rush, and it rocks hard.

There are 3 instrumentals.. the first being 6 minutes, "the main monkeye business." Second longest instrumental (first being la villa strangiato). It is AWESOME. The second instrumental is just lifeson and is only about 2 minutes but it is 2 minutes of the most beautiful accoustic guitar ever. It really reminded me of something Jimmy page would do back in the days of ZEP B'ron yar stomp to be spacific. The third instrumental is about 2:15 and is called Malignant Narcissism. Malignant Narcissism is the new YYZ. Believe it.

Usually when i get a new rush disk, there are 3 or 4 songs that i really dig, and i expect most of the others to grow on me in time, and they usually do. Out of the 13 tracks on this album, 9 or 10 of them are down right awesome from the get go. I have to say i am pleasently surprised and actually blown away by how good this record is. Getting that guy who produced the Foo fighters has payed off big time. This sounds like rush at their prime, If they hit their prime in the new millenium. Then again i'm a pretty big rush fan, but they havent made an album like this since i've jumped on the bandwagon.

I think there might be a reason why it sounds good. While I haven't heard it, I have heard complaints about the way the last few albums were mastered (in a way that each song sounds as loud as others through audio processors at radio stations). I don't know the specifics behind it, but this article (http://www.mindspring.com/~mrichter/dynamics/dynamics.htm) explains it well. But then again, you might know a lot more about this crap than me, E ta the D.

Heap...I agree completely. The last few albums have had a lack of quality production. Presto for instance, which i think has some great tunes, could have been alot better if it was produced in a more aggresive manner. It just lacked real punch and felt flat, even after the crescendos (sp?).

Swirly... Yes, that's what i was trying to say.

A second concert has just been added for RUSH's hometown Toronto gig. Might have to try and get ducats for that second show. The last time I saw RUSH live was 1979/80, Hemispheres tour. Great album I might add. Not to mention "A Farewell to Kings". Love that vintage RUSH.

Did you know that YYZ is the code meaning "Toronto" for the Pearson (Toronto) International Airport? That's where the name came from. A little trivia for you there.

why yes it is - HUGE fireworks on may 2-4 - as well as the fact that Port Dalhouse is THEEE place to go for partying with about 10 clubs in a 2 block radius...

and it's nice to know Karla Homolka and Paul Bernardo lived just up the street on Bayview Dr.

but yes - Lakeside Park is happening...now if all the medical waste would just be dealt with, as well as all the paper mill effluent and sewage being dumpd into the 12 mile Creek (old Welland Canal), then people could actually swim in the water w/out e coli and other illnesses.

and you can still sore joints from the skinny rockers behind the carousel...ahhh...back in the day "2 for 5, man"...pinners, of course.

Seriously - Healey's has round backed chairs and even the bins etc. have been modified so that there are no sharp edges to accidentally bump into, extra room b/w the seating (it's a L shaped room with a lounge type area still close enough to the stage to hear it all loud and good), and then the back part of the long 'L' area has giant vid monitors so you can hang back, hear the tunes and watch the band perform, but still stand around and hear each other talk, etc.

It's kind of a cool idea when you think about it - there HAS to be other clubs that have this kind of progressive Blind Melon Jefferson set up.

I wonder what a streip club for the sight impaired would be like?

can you cash in dollars for braille paper credits of certain denominations?

come to think of it, it would be a kick ass way for some counties in some states with "Champagne Rooms" to get around the "no touching" laws! A whole host of excuses could work there.

I pre-ordered it from Amazon so I received it the day it was released on May 1. I am enjoying it very much. With the exception of maybe one track, it's going to get a lot of play in my regular rotation. I think it's as close to old school Rush as they have produced in 20+ years. I would like to have heard more interesting runs from Alex. I don't think this is anywhere near his best effort. Overall I like it though.

Ed, I'll pick the album up tomorrow. Now that both of my boys are into Rush and all of the old hard rock and heavy metal stuff, they'll also get a kick out of it. My only trepidation about Rush for awhile now is that increasingly since the late 80's, they've just gotten too smooth and mainstream for my tastes. Cruise, give me 2112, Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres.

On a humorous side note, when I was in college I lived in the dorms next to the corp at A&M. Given that we lived in the high-end dorms that were next to the golf course, they called us the country club. You can imagine the animosity that created with the corp turds. Well, long story short, every spring afternoon we'd open our windows, crank up the Rush, and go outside in front of the corp quad to play hackey-sack. Oh yeah, every afternoon the corp also had manuevers in the quad.

Gawd, how I miss college. 7 and 1/2 years just weren't enough.

Well, actually, the first 5 1/2 were for two B.S. degrees and the final 2 were for a quick Masters. Of course, between the golf course, hanging out with the sow diving team and general partying, I missed out on the M.S. by 9 hours.

I'm not complaining, mind you. Why the hell do you think I miss college?

I had a chance to see Rush a number of weeks ago in Tampa. It was one of two rock concerts that I attended that very weekend. Both are bands that I have been wanting to see live now for 20+ years but previously never had the opportunity to do so.

The show started with the showing of the first of several video skits throughout the night, which truthfully was rather lame and goofy but you expect to see something like that from them. Alex then ran out to stage first, playing the opening couple chords of "Limelight", with Neil and then Geddy running out next. It is a good song to open with although I was predicting they would march out with "Far Cry" instead, nevertheless that is what they opened up with in the second half of the show after the intermission.

Other brief observations:
-I bet they played 75% of the songs from "Snakes and Arrows". I think they knew that this was one of their best studio albums in a while.
-They played a number of other somewhat obscure songs from their past that I was not expecting. Some are among my favorites: "A Passage to Bangkok", "Signals" (the crowd erupted when the opening of this song was played), "Natural Science", "Entre Nous".
-Alex appears to have slimmed down a bit. I was beginning to worry about him. For a while he was beginning to look like John Daly.
-About 40K were in attendance and I think the show was sold out. I was really shocked to see the high proportion of women at the show since I always thought females hated this band. Oddly I did not see any minority there at all except for one who looked like he was of Indian desent. You would think there would be at least one brotha there somewhere.
-During "Workin' Them Angels" they showed a graphic on the JumboTron that seemingly paid homage to the troops. The audience stood up and gave a standing ovation. It is surprising to see something like that from today's music industry, even more so since they are all natives from that Socialist leaning country.
-I always dug Neil's drum solos and he outdid himself again. I was very happy to see that someone recorded that very performance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9RxWPFiB-c

This doesn't really surprise me as Neil is very much an Ayn Rand geek. 2112 was inspired by her novella "Anthem", which I highly recommend.

Good stuff Sledge. As for the videos, that's a RUSH standard that goes back to at least Moving Pictures. I wish I was going to see them here next month, but seeing any concert outdoors in Houston in the middle of August is just fucking stupid. Plus, it's rained every GD day for three months. Thanks Boss. Many of the videos played during the songs were indeed cool. I was earlier mainly referring to the intro skits. Where they played was at an ampitheater so although it was outdoors the heat or spontaneous precipitation was not an issue because of the overhead. I get what your saying about sitting out there in the open during the summer.

I also heard they played Witch Hunt on this tour. I'm pretty much pissed that i didnt get to see this tour. First time i have missed them since my first show on the presto tour.
Yes, they played that one as well. By the way I meant to inscribe "Subdivisions" and not "Signals" earlier. Any Rush fan should know better.
Other songs that were played that I neglected to mention: "Circumstances", "Freewill", "Spirit of Radio" (the "Permanent Waves" album was well represented in this show), "Yyz" (they ended with this one), "Tom Sawyer" (of course), "Between the Wheels", "Mission" (fairly certain they did anyway), "Dreamline", "Summertime Blues" (ugh). There may have been a couple others but I cannot seem to remember. I do know they did not play very many songs from their earliest albums at all. I am so-o-o glad they did not play "Closer to the Heart", being the only Rush guy who cannot stand that song.
