View Full Version : Coolest TV intro of all time?
Sledge Hammer!
12-31-2006, 09:05 PM
While surfing Youtube in a desultory fashion I came across a few collections of intros to television shows that I had all but forgotten. Elaborate contemporary TV intros are becoming increasingly nonexistent now that the greedy major networks are trying to squeeze out as much commercial airtime as they possibly can.
Most of you who are at least as old as I am should remember a late 80's show called The Equalizer. I always felt it's intro was the coolest and even still not outdated by today's standards. I defy anyone to think of a better example:

Is it just me, or did every sequence in that opener give you the impression that a woman was about to be raped... I never saw the show, so I wouldn't know if that was the whole point or not. If that is in fact the case then good lord, I bet HIF just loved that show!

"In 1972, a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit. They promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no-one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the A-Team."
Now THAT'S an intro!
BTW, I'm waiting for the forthcoming A-Team remake, starring Chris Tucker as B.A.

Some of the old themes I really liked as a kid were Barnaby Jones, Lost In Space, Mannix, Man From Uncle and even the theme from Captain Kangaroo. These were all in the 60's & 70's though and I'd have to think for a bit to come up with some more current ones.

Billy, I think you should throw in Welcome Back Kotter as a depressing theme.
Mission Impossible is a great theme song even after Cruise's goat blow renditions and after the "almighty" Limp Bizkit hacked it.

To me, Welcome Back Kotter, wasn't so much as depressing as it was... dirty. And mundain. I remember as a kid seeing the intro and thinking "Why would people wanna live like that?"
Of course, I've never lived in a BIG East Coast city so I can't really relate.

I really liked the intro/title sequence and music for Carnivale. Really gave you what you needed to know about the era of it, the fact that it was sort of mystical, and the music worked in both the 'good' and 'bad' guy's leitmotif's.

Gotta love the song (step by step , day by day, a fresh start over a different hand to play), and all the gags around the amusment park. Kid sneezing into the popcorn, people dropping ice creams, and then it finishes off with a nice shot of colusses the roller coaster superimposed on a beach.

I'm pretty sure I've never seen a whole episode of this show, and yet to me James Garner is cool as hell, solely on the strength of that intro and that car. Also he reminds me of my dad.
I read somewhere that he (Garner) was TV-Cool, but not Movie-Hot, and thus never successfully made the transition.
