View Full Version : New years resolution anyone?
I don't usually do the New years resolution thing. They don't ever seem to work out for people that do them. This really isn't a resolution per se, it's just time. I'm going for the double whammy this year. I've smoked for 23 years and I'm quitting, tired of the shit. I also weigh about 255 lbs at 6ft tall, I'm shooting for 215 in 5 months if not sooner. I've got good solid plans for accomplishing both tasks. I've planned for altering my diet and increased excersize regimen. Going with the nicotine gum to quit smoking. With my job the boredom and inclination to snack is a big obstacle to overcome, hopefully the gum will help with that along with the cravings.

Whew! Those are two tough ones to tackle at once! Good luck, AB. I might give up alcohol, gambling and my ex for lent, whenever it rolls around. If at the end of 40 days, I wanna stay off of one or more of them, then I'll consider something more permanent.

In addition to the gum and patch, there is the perscription med Zyban, and new in 2006 another prescription item was approved see below. Good luck on beating demon Tobacco.
Varenicline Approved as Smoking-Cessation Aid
http://www.ashp.org/s_ashp/sec_news_article.asp?CID=167&DID=2024&id=15296
[Updated May 12, 2006]
Cheryl A. Thompson
BETHESDA, MD, 11 May 2006 — The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Pfizer Inc. announced this morning that varenicline, or Chantix, has been approved to help tobacco smokers quit the habit.
Varenicline, the company said, partially activates nicotine receptors in the brain. When taken by a smoker, the drug reduces the severity of nicotine craving and intensity of withdrawal symptoms.
FDA's Curt Rosebraugh, deputy director of the office that approved the new drug application, said patients should receive "intensive counseling" but not an additional smoking-cessation agent while using varenicline.
Pfizer said the recommended regimen for varenicline therapy is 0.5 mg once a day for the first three days, 0.5 mg twice a day to finish the first week, and then 1 mg twice a day until treatment ends.
Blister pack or bulk?
According to the newly available labeling (PDF) for Chantix, the smoking-cessation agent will be available in film-coated tablets containing 0.5 or 1 mg of varenicline free base.
Pfizer will distribute the product in four-week blister packs or 56-tablet bottles.
The blister packs come in two versions: one for the first month of therapy, during which the dosage of varenicline gradually increases from 0.5 mg daily to 1 mg twice daily; and another to continue therapy at 1 mg twice daily.
The 56-count bottles contain 0.5-mg tablets or 1-mg tablets.
Only patients with impaired renal function need the 0.5-mg tablets throughout a 12-week course of therapy. Those with severe renal impairment should start varenicline therapy at a dosage of 0.5 mg once daily and may increase to 0.5 mg twice daily if needed. Patients undergoing hemodialysis because of end-stage renal disease should take no more than 0.5 mg of varenicline once daily.
The gradual increase in dosage is needed, Rosebraugh said, to try to limit the occurrence of nausea, the drug's most common adverse effect.
According to FDA, patients are to take varenicline for 12 weeks. Those patients who quit smoking during that time may continue therapy for 12 more weeks.
FDA said the purpose of continuing therapy is to "further increase the likelihood of long-term smoking cessation."
The agency's preliminary review of the efficacy studies on varenicline, Rosebraugh said, suggested that patients taking the drug "may have a superior rate of smoking cessation compared to another currently approved smoking-cessation product, which was Zyban, or buproprion."
Zyban, GlaxoSmithKline's buproprion hydrochloride sustained-release tablets, was approved by FDA in 1997.
Rosebraugh said varenicline has not been studied in persons younger than age 18.
In addition to nausea, FDA and Pfizer said the drug's most common adverse effects reported to date have been vomiting, flatulence, and unusual dreams.
Rosebraugh said nightmares, a type of unusual dream, occurred at a "very low frequency" in varenicline users.
Pfizer spokeswoman Shreya Prudio said Chantix would be available to pharmacies "this summer."
The company, in announcing the approval of Chantix, said users of the product will have the option of enrolling for free in a behavioral support program that offers online and telephone interactions.
Until recently, Pfizer had been referring to varenicline by the brand name Champix. Rosebraugh said he did not know the reason for the change to Chantix.

You might be putting a lot on your plate. It's often hard for people to keep from gaining weight when they quit smoking- your metabolism slows down enormously. Maybe you should aim to maintain your weight for the first couple of months 'till the smoking cessation is easier, then think weight loss..
Or, you could just be an iron-willed SOB who can do it all at once. More power to you.:tipofthecap:

We gonna find out, that's for sure! I know it's a lot at the same time, but GD it, I'm tired of it, just freaking tired of it! Shameful confession: I actually quit smoking for 2 years a while back. Started back when I started driving a truck 6 years ago (what a freakin loser I am). Thanks for the well wishes.

Zyban, a prescription med to help smoking cessation, has a side effect in many of reduced appetite and weight loss. It's the same medicine in the antidepressant Wellbutrin but is marketed for smoking cessation. The studies looked good compared to cold turkey and it seems to have docs and patients who really think it works. You may want to discuss this with [click]

pre note: I tried the Zyban thing in quitting smoking and it was HELL - the side effects were horrid...but some DO find success with it...
that said - here are my New Year's resolutions:
1. Quiting smoking by Feb.- i have a very sick family member that needs to quit and by me continuing, it will impede her ability to quit.
2. Dedicate even MORE time to work related activities: my professional goals far exceed the limits that exist at the station I work at...and I know I must move on within 18 months if I want to make sure I am covering the 2008 Presidential Election again...
3. Complete both the extra college degree and University degree I am chipping away at for a grad date of Fall 2007 - again to boost my academic credentials for my dream job in journalism at either radio or print media - or both.
4. More physical activity: my job leaves me sedantary and I need to maintain a level of health...and this will also contribute to my energy level for work and help me quit smoking.
5. Complete my EP / or album for the label that would like to release a record for me after the demise of my last band...
6. Follow leads, goals, and ideas fearlessly and without reservation...
7. Continue to speak my mind, consequences be damned...in retrospect, over the years, I have been right and proper more often than not...
As the Butthole Surfers say in 'Sweat Loaf' from the Locust Abortion technician LP: " It's better to regret something you HAVE done, than to regret something you haven't...and by the way, if you see your mom this weekend, be sure and tell her ...'Satan!...Satan!...Satan!..."
even though I am a seething atheist...it doesn't mean I don't wish all of ny gloid friends here the very best this Season...and total success for 2007...

I used Zyban w/ the patch when I quit in 1999. It worked for me but in any case you really have to want to quit. 2 weeks before I went on the program my doctor had me write down in a notebook every time I lit up what exactly I was getting out of the cigarette I was smoking. I didn't know what good it did while I was doing it but I did quit.

I don't nornaly make a new years resolution, but I did at the begining of this year and I said that I was going to lose wight. Well this year I lost 25 pounds. I went down from 230-205, and next year I want to lose even more weight. My next weight goal is around 180-190. Wish me luck.

I used to make resolutions until I realized how very futile it is for me to expect that my behavior will change just because the date changes...so now, every January 1, I sacrifice a goat and two cats, gorge myself on fatty food, get drunk and/or stoned, screw an underage cheerleader and eat an orange with a pinch of aspertame on top...
Haven't lost any weight, tho...damn.
Happy New Year ever'body!

Atascadero, I've never smoked but I have struggled for freaking years with weight, and I'm finally on top of it. I can give you advice if you like. It's not easy or fast, but it works. PM me if interested. I would tackle one and then the other, but NOT both at once. This stuff works only very slowly, and with small steps. Trust me.

My resolution is to think serene thoughts and concentrate on the good things in my life instead of wondering how it would feel to be tortured to death and cut in half like the Black Dahlia. Well, the cutting in half part probably wouldn't matter at that point.
I'll also listen to my self-hypnosis CD's on a regular basis. I have Stress Reduction, Relaxation, & Perfect Memory CD's. Holy Jeez, if used the Memory one more often, I would remember to listen to it on a regular basis. Dang. There are Quit Smoking hypnosis CD's out there too.
AB, you will achieve success.
