We're into the third day of this now, & it's supposed to last until Boxing Day. I can't remember fog sticking around like this, but it's pretty cool. Reminds me of when I used to go down the Olde Cheshire Cheese with Charles Dickins, Sherlock Holmes & Queen Victoria...

50,000 STUCK AS FOG CREATES FLIGHT CHAOS
By Mirror.co.uk
THOUSANDS of travellers face misery this Christmas with over 350 flights at Heathrow and other UK airports cancelled due to thick fog.

British Airways has cancelled all domestic and some European flights from Heathrow and other airlines are now following suit. Up to 50,000 passengers have been affected.

It is the second day the fog has forced air traffic controllers to limit the number of flights taking off and it is feared the situation could continue for another couple of days, causing havoc as people try to visit loved ones for the festive period.

Frustrated passengers have been forced to sleep at airports overnight while they await news.

Airport operators BAA are urging people to call their airline before setting off for the airport in an attempt to ease congestion.

All flights from Coventry and some from Cardiff, Scotland and Gatwick have also been grounded.

European airlines, Lufthansa and Alitalia were forced to cancel flights yesterday and will do the same again today.

Services to Paris and Brussels with BA are expected to be affected today as well.

The airline said the situation is beyond its control and asked people to call 0800 727 800 or check www.ba.com to check if they are able to travel.

Over three million people were expected to leave the country over Christmas, with the most popular destinations being Southern Spain and north Africa.

Tomorrow is predicted to be the busiest day at airports and around 18 million vehicles are expected to take to the road, with today being the busiest.

Lee- is there still pollution in London? I mean, I know it's not like in the days of the industrial revolution...when the fog was liberally mixed with nice big doses of black soot...but how's the air quality now?

The air in Pittsburgh used to be so dirty that at times they had to turn on streetlamps in the middle of the day.

We've been dealing with some of that pea soup here for about a week. A cold front blew it out yesterday. Then about an hour ago the mother of all storm came through. There must have been 60-70 mph gusts and about 2 inches of hail on the ground.

It's not killing as many people these days, & it's normally okay most of the time. It still gets a a bit naughty on the odd day in the summer though.

I forgot you Yanks don't have it. It's the day after Christmas, a bank holiday & there's a full football schedule. It's great. You can stay drunk for two days.
