Stuff gets made up, sometimes it's nonsense and sometimes it's brilliant. It has the benefit of being something someone will ask you about, that you can just bluntly tell them about and watch their face as they just... don't... get ... it. Do you think a shirt with a fucking catfish on it would seem racist in the least to anybody? Well, anybody who hasn't spent dozens of hours on SFJ? I never thought a thing about catfish until the watermelon man thread. Yeah, I knew black people fish for them, and they are nasty little fish when in ponds. But I had no racist connection until that glorious day I refreshed that thread and there was a beautiful fucking catfish on the asphalt. For that matter a bucket of chicken or a watermelon standing alone doesn't mean anything, nor are they funny. But photoshop it around a passed out boogie, and that's comedy gold!
Seriously, I'd wear that catfish shirt in the hood. No more likely to get my ass beat than on any other day. I'd feel a little off wearing the catfish on an SFJ shirt, considering that if the URL is on it, someone could remember it, go to the site and get this impression that everyone's a bunch of sheet wearing white trash - they don't know Phil Hendrie from any other guy on the street.

I'd get looks around here for something that said sweet feathery jesus, but I don't care. I'd care about any looks I get from someone thinking I'm a racist.

But - it's just one girls opinion and I certainly don't represent the 'norm' in almost any subculture that I belong to. No matter what, you can't live your life worried that you're going to randomly offend someone and try to preempt that every minute of the day. I just realize that someone who wanders here with no basis in the fandom just won't 'get it'.

I've lived in Durham and Winston-Salem, about as racially charged as they get. Went to an all-black college for a year, my high school was over 50% black, played sports, boxed with brothers, known an awful lot of rednecks... and catfish as a racist emblem I've never heard outside of the watermelon thread and following SFJ gags. It all started with "Where'd the catfish go?" when someone posted from an older pic. I'd be stunned if anyone even looked twice at it, is all I'm saying. I for one, am a staunch supporter of the catfish (no surprise). The fact that it is an inside joke is exactly what makes it funny. It has graced many threads outside of Catfish Daddy Down, and is vital part of any PhotoShop including an Africa-American. Like so many things on this site that aren't directly Phil-related, it brings laughter and joy and warms the hearts of dozens. To deny the catfish's rightful place as the symbol of SFJ is akin to those that sought to have the turkey become the emblem of America rather than the Bald Eagle.
