KFJ,

What is a "vanity thread" ?

It's a thread made for the sole purpose of attention whoring. An example would be creating a poll asking how cool/dumb you are. Crap like that will be locked immediately.

It's disruptive and serves no purpose other than to incite people. I'm on the fence about even letting politics be discussed here at all. It could fall under #2 although it's not written exactly that way.

Hard to do, though, since Phil discusses politics on his show.

Limiting discussion of forums always has repercussions. I'm not saying it's a bad idea, just that there are gonna be whiners. But there are always whiners, and you're the boss, so screw them anyway. \:D/

I'm sure there are plenty of political chat rooms people can easily find. For Christ's sake will anyone really change thier stance because of something in a chat room. I'd rather discuss which breakfast cereal make me hurl (Super Sugar Crisps with a few extra spoonfuls of sugar).

I'm not trying to incite people, just putting something out there for discussion and opinion. The forum is called 5th Ring, "Talk about anything" and I thought people might want to discuss these photos. Phil has discussed this on the show many times, so it's not foreign to PHS listeners. There's a difference between being disruptive and stimulating discussion.

People will go tard no matter where it is.
If you want a tard free or ON topic thread, just state it when you start it. Then let a mod know if it starts getting out of control and we'll either delete or split the topic from where it strayed.

Maybe it's not such a hot idea. I just think we could keep it together and have a fun forum where we discuss topics with throwing the gay flag every few posts :gay: Or getting bent because a current topic was being discussed we didn't agree with. We've done it before on religion, of all things, for several pages before it became a problem. And that was with complete freedom to call someone a D-bag. I dunno. Like I said, just an idea.

I know I am very green, wet-behind-the-ears, etc. to SFJ, but it seems like it would be worth a try. If it doesn't go well - ok, lesson learned. I agree with KFJ that threads can be started with the intent of real (cerebral) discussion and if others get outta' line then let them know - but to actually have the "space" to do it might make it more thoughtful-friendly, and convey the intent of real discussion as opposed to humorous insult exchange.

If I may lend some thoughts to this conversation, there is no getting around Human Nature. From time to time, there are inevitably going to be cultural misunderstandings, ideological differences, untern agression, misplaced anger, and conflict. If one is going to run a public forum, occasional conflict should be expected.

I have noticed that the conflict around here is resolved swiftly. One of the reasons I have stayed around here for so long is that I admire the civility of the people here. All truth be told, I'm 180 degrees from 90% of SFJ members. But like I've asked here before, Please try to be forgiving towards those who are not of the "democratic" majority. Want to scare me away? How about a rule like:

Don't start a dozen new threads in one day, and flood the whole G.D. board with short crappy posts.

Don't start a dozen vanity new threads in one day, and flood the whole G.D. board with nonsensical crap.

That's a good idea. I hate clicking a thread with no description but just a link. Links can be anything, NSFW material, viruses, etc.

How about something like:

Do not post threads containing only a link. Please describe what is in the link. If it is an article or story, please post a few paragraphs and link to the rest.

As for threads with one or two words, those threads are perfectly acceptable in the Rusty Pelican 3AM forum. That's what it's for.

I'm gonna work on setting up a subscription thread for this, I promise.
