I was friends with a racist guy in high school who made a lot of racist jokes and was considered the most racist guy in school, but even non-white people laughed at his jokes and was actually pretty well-liked even by non-caucasians. I am only half-white and he even invited me to hang out at his house!

The first time I heard Bud's problem with black people -- he doesn't like them but he doesn't mind being friends with them -- it instantly reminded me of this guy...a benign racist.

Anyone know someone like that?

I don't know anybody like that. Bud's racism is kind of odd... He hangs out with that football player (or was it basketball) because he's cool. He wants to date the black UPS girl because "she's beautiful." Yet he doesn't like blacks in general.

I've lived in Georgia for a couple of years. The white guys out there are just like that. You can crack joke after joke with pretty much anyone out there who's white, though they don't hate have blacks. It's just their way of life I guess. I'm from Chattanooga, TN and calling a black person the "N word" is the equivalent to calling a white person a "redneck" or "asshole". It is something you can call a person if you are friends with them but if you call someone that you don't know a "N word"/"redneck"/"asshole" you are going to get your ass kicked. You can call a close black friend the "N word" and he won't care a bit, but if you walk up to someone you don't know that is black and call him the "N word" you are going to get hurt, and his white friends are going to help him hurt you.

My perspective from Atlanta.

It ain't nothing but a thing down here. Everyone gets along, unless there is a buck or a vote to be made off of it. Most of those bucks and votes are made off of the black vs. white thing, from the black perspective, but everyone knows it doesn't really mean anything. It is just a handle that gets used, then goes away.

MalcolmX could sell popcorn down here on a street corner, but I don't think anyone would be buying much else from him.

That being said, I moved here from Houston a few years ago, and back there it is pretty serious. They could learn something in Houston from how things work in Atlanta - everybody does Christmas [xcept the Muslim shitheads] and nobody really cares about making some kind of racial political thing out of stuff. A little off topic here, but I just listened to the Dave Oliva bit about King Kong being racist. I've heard this about several movies, most notably Star Wars. I honestly do not see the inherent racism when I watch these movies. Am I just ignorant or is the rest of the world so bent out of shape that they see racism everywhere?

When my school would have dances, they would play a country or rock song and the whites would all dance. Then a black song would play, and the floor would clear for the spades to dance. My Dad had an Army buddy that was a hard-core biggot. Everything out of his mouth was "porch monkey this and spear chucker that. He knew every derrogatory term used to describe black people out there...

You name it, he said it. His acumen for racist jokes were like no other, as well. He knew them all. The guy was a real peice of work. The funny thing is, he had some black buddies that served with him too. His logic was so backward regardig how he felt about black people. *Side note* This guy was about 5'-2" tall, but he was one of them guys that you still didn't wanna mess with. That and he had a serious case of little-big man's syndrome which made him even more dangerous.

Anyway, So one time when I was about 16 years old, My parents had a huge party and invited all my dad's Army comrades. Well Dave came early and within minutes, he was starting in with his usual bs about blacks, so I called him out and said, "Hey Dave, when Charles comes over later, why don't you tell him that joke about why black people have big noses? Oh that's right, Charles would probably kick your ass for being such a fucking idiot."

Ol' Dave didn't like that too much and my Dad wasn't wasn't too happy with my choice of words either. Later, Dave privately threatened me and said the only reason why I'm not spitting up blood right then, is because I was my dad's kid. I then said, "No, the reason why I'm not spitting up blood right now, is because I don't think the Army or my father for that matter, would be too thrilled about one of their Master Sergants beating the shit out of a minor. So piss off."

Then he called me a peice of shit, punk and told me that I'll never be half the man that my dad is. I then said "Well you aren't either, you little midget." He then lunged at me and wrestled me to the ground and I was seconds away from shitting my pants. Charles (the black guy) of all people, came to my rescue and pulled him off. My dad had, had enough with me and I was told to go hang out with my firends for the rest of the day. I was so pissed. I was made out to look like this little trouble making shit because my parents didn't want to upset the Grand Dragon Douche bag-Dave.

Who cares if he was a guest. My mom didn't like him and my dad only tolorated his shit because he was a big fisherman and hunter, like my dad was. but that's how my parents were, when guest were over. They were kings and I was a mere peasant. My dad later apologized and told me that after I left, he told Dave to never touch me again or else. Dave then flamed out and left. My dad and he never hung out, outside of the base again.

Dude, the older black folks around here all call themselves or other blacks "colored." That's an age thing, not a racist term. It even goes forward another generation to 40-50 year olds. I suppose it's different in various areas, but the coastal southern blacks use the term "colored" freely, except for the younger folk.

I still get refered to as, "this is someone my son knows" when being introduced to family friends, instead of this is my son's fiancee or girlfriend. Oh, & after I met her & let her stay in my home about 6 years ago, she was insane, if his sister sat next to me she would yank the child away from me by the arm & once she got home she sent a box of 50 condoms to our place. She also told a good friend of ours how she didn't approve of the hispanic!

She also attempted to call the police on my landlord at the time because he was Italian & he must have been with the mob, since he ran an auto body shop. Must have been a chop shop, huh?

Damn, I feel for you, Mrs. Rube. I think those people, like your mother-in-law, that don't realize they're racist are easily the most tragic. Fortunately this insane behavior didn't rub off on the kids, they know she should be locked up too, they actually tried once. She basically has a problem with everyone, she just uses race with me & the son-in-law.

Just a drama queen, if it isn't that it is religion she uses that as well. A bit of mostly forgotten historical trivia. The original Confederate flag was the "Stars and Bars". However, because it so closely resembled the US flag, the Confederate states came up with the Confederate Battle flag (aka Southern Cross) to avoid confusion on the battlefield. And while the Southern Cross was then incorporated into the next two official Confederate flags as part of and not the entire flags, it has remained the unofficial Confederate flag to this day (thanks in no small part to the racist idiots who have used it as a dishonorable tool for their hatred).

one word: my mother...i brought home (about 10 yrs ago) a boyfriend and my old friend for christmas dinner. while sitting around talking a discussion started up about racism...fast forward...my mom raised her decaf with steam rising out of her cup and in a matter of fact tone she declared "not all ni**ers are bad" and just like Lloyd, went back to sipping her drink thinking nothing of it.
