How do you listen to the show?
If it varies, choose the one you use most often.

I listen live when I can, to the streams when I can't. The location station preempts the first and ocassionally the second PHS hours for Michael Savage or Sean Hannity or one of those rectums.

75% of the time I listen live. There is nothing like listening to a classic bit and knowing that you listened to it live.

I usually listen to streams from the character archives.... but when i listen live i usually listen to streaming audio from PHS.com or any other radiostation that carries the show and streams audio over the net ( sometimes i like to have commercialls in there).

After i got my BSP i found myself listening live less than before i had it. I wrote Phil an email asking how that would impact his business with ratings and all and if he cared if i listened less live and had a backstage pass, or if he would rather i had no backstage pass but listened live every night....... he never replied

Only occasionally. The BSP has me used to hearing the 3 hour show in only 2 hours.

I wrote Phil an email asking how that would impact his business with ratings and all and if he cared if i listened less live and had a backstage pass, or if he would rather i had no backstage pass but listened live every night....... he never replied

The thing is, unless you fill out a ratings book, nobody in the business really cares if you're listening (or watching on TV, for that matter). I filled out an Arbitron book back in the 80s for about two months and then gave up; I just didn't care enough. Now, I'd give my eye teeth to be counted in the ratings (both TV and radio) so, of course, I'm no longer qualified. ;)

As for how I listen, since the MP3 debacle started I listen at home to the non-live streams and on the go to the "Hendrie Shuffle" of MP3s on my Nomad (out of 40GB, Hendrie is around half). I started out listening to Hendrie on my 20-year-old clock radio, so even the streaming quality is a big step up.

Most of the time I listen with the mp3s at work on mp3 discs. Yeah, I don't have an iPod, but I am doing okay with the discs. Sometimes I can listen live streaming on his website.

I live between Seattle WA and Portland OR and Phil has been on and off in both markets a couple a times. Both towns are full of pretentious a-holes that don't know funny. I started collecting Phil's show on CDs and that is all I listen to as I drive my log truck. Sometimes I have to claw myself back into the seat after laughing so hard that my eyeballs start to bleed, wrench the wheel to the left to avoid the ditch, and stand on the binders to keep from ass-ending the school bus in front of me. I had to get a new computer with a bigger drive, more memeory, faster burner, a high-speed internet connection, an improved sound recorder program, and buy shares in Memorex to get a discount on blank CD-Rs. Phil Hendrie is not only a comedic genius, an entertainer extra-ordinaire, and a national treasure, He is also an economic stimulus and without him the US (and indirectly the world) economies would surely suffer. By his crap 'cause what is good for Phil, is good for the world. .....Okay...I've had a few pops.

I record the streams with Audacity, then burn them to CDs to listen to at work. Unlike Harpoontang, my player won't play mp3s, so I have a LOT of 80 minute CD's laying around. I have burned like 250 so far, and now that I've started using mIRC, that number is going to climb fast. I can't get an iPOD soon enough, and at the rate I'm going, it's going to have to be a 60GB version.

When I worked nights I listened to the KFI stream over the 'net live. Now I work more sensible hours I'm asleep at 3am when the show starts so I record the Xtra sports stream and listen to it in the car.

As both a Portlander and a pretentious a-hole, I must take strong issue with your characterization! Don't blame the listeners because the jagoffs in charge of radio stations somehow think (for example) that an AM oldies station is going to attract higher quality listeners than a talk station.

Seriously, though, I've found Portland to be filled mostly with the unpretentious - at least compared to other "big" cities. :)

I listen to 610AM CKTB in St. Catherines Ontario. It is right across the border from me, but I swear they turn their wattage down at dusk because It comes in so shittily at 7pm. The sumertime is good though. Or if I drive closer to Canada. My net connection isn't whatit should be, so I can't download it. CKTB plays the shows a day later but I don't mind, when I can tune them in that is. I also enjoy the PHS group (and Phil character spaces) on Myspace.com

I use TotalRecorder to record the live stream each night, then listen to it the next day. Took me a while to figure this out, but it sure beats the butchered crap that gets posted. You simply schedule the start and end days and times, and it just records to an MP3 (or whatever) file. A must for the serious Hendrie fan. I only wish I could re-do the couple of months of clipped audio earlier this year. :(

I podcast it every G.D. night. Then I save the hours featuring my favorite characters in folders with their names, e.g. Bobbie Dooley, Margaret Gray, Jay Santos, etc. I name the file by the character name, a summary of the bit, and the date. Here is an example: Bobbie-PanFaceInIraq-01-05. In the comments section of properties, I paste in the description of the hour from the website.

I listen to bits I like over and over and over again and laugh every time. I'll put them on real quiet when I go to sleep at night. Nobody I know thinks this is all as funny as I do. How is this? I belly laugh. I must be special. Short bus special.

Live Stream 25% / Xtra 570 25% / MP3 50%.

MP3 if I am out, but I miss some of the bits that use music, so I try to skip those and go back and listen on line.

When I am on my game, my computer is setup to record the live stream via i-sound, then I cut the bumper sections out with a sound editor.

My favorite program for recording the streams is called Replay Music. It records them to mp3 and then I listen to it on my iPod with all the music. It's great! It will automatically stop recording when the show is over so you don't have to wait by your computer, you can just start it recording and leave.

There are other programs that you can ask people about, but this one's my favorite. Here's the link: http://www.applian.com/replay-music/index.php

I download the pirated mp3 from the newsgroups.. commercial free and WITH music. "Podcasting" really doesn't mean anything, just another "buzzword" made up by some non-tech business pig.

My local station has such bad reception I rarely listen live, and I can't stand commercials.

I had a business trip to Charlotte in the fall. So I d/l 30 days worth of MP3's and listened to them there and back. Now I burn them to cd's and listen to them for about 2 weeks and then burn some more.

Needless to say, I found out about this site two weeks after Phil talked about it.

if they could get the Mp3's with music, they would have something there... I can't stand the silence in the background of some bits, and how other bits are totally cut off/sliced up.... and not having the imperial march when David comes on... ::shudders:: and hearing Phil screaming at Bud to turn off that damn music when nothing is playing, really takes away from the fun.... ugh...

so i listen to streams after the fact, because then i don't have to wait for commercial breaks... and i try to record em to mp3 with soundforge whenever i gotta chance so i can throw it on my iPod, cause foreal... there's nothing better than Phil on the iPod...

Yeah, you are 100% right. We discussed this in a previous thread, which I'll reproduce for you for your convenience.

By the way, I think I'm breaking some kind of record by quoting myself.

What's really fucking stupid is the fact that they RIAA was fine with the mp3's before Phil started mentioning "Podcasting" on the air. Remember?

The technology was no different; you could download the mp3's before and do whatever you want with them, and it's the same now (except for the media center does it automatically for you each day). Hello!!?? Am I the only one who sees the idiocy of this? Apparently, the RIAA folks somehow think that calling it a "Podcast" changes it into something that it wasn't before! And they still allow streams, which you can record with the right software! Where is the logic in this??? I think it's a complete lack of understanding of technology, and they just got caught up in the buzzword "Podcast". Have you noticed that even though that word became popular, people have no idea what it really means? They somehow think that before the word "Podcast" we didn't have the ability to download something and put it on an mp3 player!

Absolutely ridiculous!

I stream it, but not live, as the hours don't work for me, and here in tampa they just butcher it, and I think they play it a day late. But I've had a backstage pass for almost three years, so, so I don't even bother risking missing my hendrie. Go with the stream if you can listen live, the MP3s blow loads of goo. No music ruins alot of bits. oh, and I love that he's added the darth hall music,, and you'd miss all that stuff with the mp3s, doug danger's top ten songs of all time bit was TERRIBLE on mp3s. Ever since, I've been using the streams.

I listen the next day via podcast download. I live in Washington, D.C., our nation's capital (where we pay taxes and have no voting representation on the Hill. IT TIGHTENS MY JAW!) To listen live would be 10pm to 1am and we don't have a decent radio signal for it.

Of course I'm a back stage passholder and can listen via the web if I want. But I don't like languishing through the all too frequent commercial time (hey, it pays the bills) and sometimes -- sorry if I offend -- sometimes I'm not entertained my PHS's chat. :(

I mostly listen for the characters. The GENIUS of the characters.

I rename each podcast with the name of the character, the theme of the bit, the date and which hour.

I record the show old school. I have my computer hooked up through my stereo cassette deckand record the shows through the stream. When I first discoverd Phil in 1998 on the radio he was on at night when I couldnt listen so I started recording the show of of the radio. The worst part was I always had to fast forward through the commercials. Then life took a turn for the better and Phil got a web site. Thank you Phil no more commercials. I take the tapes to work and listen when I can. Havent missed a show since 98. The tapes have also enabled me to turn on a huge amount of friends and customers to Phil. I keep my favorites and can go back and listen wfen I want to. Who says the new technology is only way to go.

I listen live on BSP. The radio station here for St. Petersburg (WFLA) carries the show delayed to the next day. And they frequently interrupt it for sports events. This is a major bummer and you'd expect better for a major metropolitan area. I like to listen to it live on BSP while playing online poker.

I use a program called Total Recorder and have the backstage pass.

I loved the MP3 downloads, but can't stand the music edits. So I purchased Total Recorder which enables me to schedule recordings of the Archived shows. I usually can record a total of 5 entire shows overnight. I then edit each Show file into 3 seperate segments (each segment is 38min) and upload to my IPOD. I currently have 9 months of PHIL HENDRIE shows.

I also invested in a ALPINE IPOD accessory so I can attach my IPOD to my Car Stereo. This enables me to control my IPOD through my car stereo and listen to PHIL HENDRIE on my commute to work (none of those FM transmitters ever worked).

I've had only four drinks tonight and didn't want to over do it, so I just smoked a little weed. Would you recommend I take the frontage road or should I just stick to the freeway tonight to get home? By the way, I've got a Don avatar too, but first come first serve.

I listen to Phil on mp3's 90% of the time and the other half I listen live. I miss Art and Darth Hall the most, but I gotta have my Phil. Whenever I'm in the car, which is a lot these days, I'm listening to Phil with only one earbud in for extra safety. Free time equals Phil time too. Sometimes he's background and sometimes I am right there, hanging on every word. The latter is usually the case. Phil is my grown-man security blanket.

BTW,even if it's off-topic,if you're curious to know how a guy living in Italy got to know and appreciatePhil, here's how: I read a very interesting piece on The Atlantic, last April about talk radio. In it the author-David Foster Wallace-mentioned Phil's show, and the premise behind it. Intrigued,I checked the website, got a BSP,and was hooked from first listen!
i still remember the 1st bit i hears,it was herb, complaining that, compared to what he had done and seen,Michael Jackson was chump change and didn't deserve all the media attention.Absolutely hilarious.

For Macintosh users, Audio Hijack is the tops for recording the streams.
Have you tried iRecordMusic?

[quote="Harpoontang"]I live between Seattle WA and Portland OR and Phil has been on and off in both markets a couple a times. Both towns are full of pretentious a-holes that don't know funny.[quote]

I live in Vancouver, WA. I totally know what you mean too. These program directors are a bunch of douches. Johnson 910 AM a.k.a. All Comedy Radio, carries Phil but half the time they cancel him and call games for the semi-pro hockey team in Portland. Don't get me wrong... I like hockey, but not on the freaking radio. How does All comedy radio=Hockey? What a bunch of idiots. They don't even pre-empt him either, they just take him off the air until there is no game. Yet they let "Comb over boy" continue to have his gay-ass little slot. They (program directors at 910AM) know he's tight with the Seattle market and they (program directors at 910AM) know that they are Seattle's red-headed step sister and they probably what "Boy" to remember them when he's only got Portland and Seattle as the only markets left airing his show.

He's got the the the...the NOG-LIP

How do I listen to the Phil Hendrie Show? Usually live, on the BSP stream. When it is live, I join up in the chat. Sometimes I load up podcasts on the iPod. My next stop is listening in studio.

I don't have BSP because I only use a computer at work. I actually record the show off the radio using my Versacorder... from Peenman!

That would rock in only ways that I can only imagine. Please tell me it would be invite only because I think "certin" people shouldn't be invited.
